Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida recently appeared in an interview with the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (around the 1:03:30 timestamp) and clarified that he wants the younger generation to handle Final Fantasy 17. He seemingly envisions a new Final Fantasy title that discusses the new challenges faced by the world today.
For the moment, I’ll just say that nothing has been decided yet. That said, if I had to say something about that… I’ve had the chance to work on two of these, [Final Fantasy] IV and [Final Fantasy] XVI, so maybe it’s time for someone new, you know. Instead of having the same old guys handle the next one,” said Yoshida.
He said the franchise is “all about challenging what’s been done before.” Yoshida further added that he does not want to pick a fight against previous Final Fantasy games, but every title so far has been created with the belief to make it the most fun.
I think in some ways it would be good to look to the future and bring in a younger generation, with more youthful sensibilities, to make a new Final Fantasy with challenges that suit today’s world.”
It is unclear whether he will be the one producing and directing the next numbered iteration. As of now, not even a direction or a genre for the title has been finalized. It could feature pixelated visuals with turn-based combat or a return to the open-world genre for all we know.

Two DLCs for the game are currently in the works and will be released in the future for the PlayStation 5. The RPG is also planned to later arrive on PC.
