- This shows that Nintendo has always been very good at keeping secrets, and it has often turned out well for everyone.
During a recent interview with IGN, Zelda’s voice actress, Patricia Summersett, revealed that before her audition for Zelda in Breath of the Wild, she was not aware of the character she’d be stepping in the shoes of. Summersett went to the audition blind, perceiving the role as another RPG fantasy. After discovering the nature of her role, she was pleasantly surprised that she would be voicing the Princess of Hyrule.
I’ve been given the thumbs up by Nintendo to confirm that I am reprising my role as Princess Zelda in Legend of #Zelda: #TearsoftheKingdom.
I’m obviously beyond thrilled to be back (Thank you Nintendo) and looking forward to May 12th! 🧝🏼♀️🐸 pic.twitter.com/FDizUzi3Gp— Patricia Summersett (@Summersett_) May 1, 2023
Patricia Summersett has grown popular for voicing Princess Zelda in Hyrule Warriors, Age of Calamity, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the most recent, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Despite her exceptional performance as the esteemed Princess of Hyrule, Summersett revealed that she was unaware of the character she had auditioned for until she got the part.
Patricia Summersett was already a veteran actress at the time of auditioning, having worked in a few Assassin’s Creed titles and voicing Ash from Rainbow Six Siege. When she received the script for her current role, she “didn’t have any other information than that it was for a princess character who had a lot of weight on her shoulders.” She recalls thinking, “It just looked like an RPG fantasy.”
Unaware of whom she would bring to life, Patricia received the news weeks later, realizing she would be voicing the titular character, Princess Zelda in Breath of the Wild. It is worth noting that Zelda is a character who has been dignified and kept mostly silent since the advent of the series. As such, even the few bits of dialogue Summersett had to voice as Princess Zelda held immense significance for the passionate fanbase.
Summersett also mentioned that in retrospect, she commends Nintendo’s secrecy regarding the audition because if she had known the gravity of her role, she would have likely succumbed to the pressure. Summersett stated, “I have a feeling that if I knew what it was, I would’ve overthought the process. I’m happy I went in blind.”
On a different note, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has achieved remarkable success, becoming the highest-rated game on OpenCritic of all time. The game’s producer has also hinted at the possibility of Zelda becoming a playable character in future titles. In other news, though, the success of this game has also spawned a mobile game rip-off that has shamelessly taken content from Tears of the Kingdom.
