Compulsion Games Is Developing A New Third-Person Campaign Game

The developers of We Happy Few are working on a third-person single-player narrative game!

Compulsion Games is a small development studio based in Montreal, Canada, and are most known for their action-adventure survival horror video game, We Happy Few. While the company was founded more than a decade ago, it did not come to attention until the release of We Happy Few in 2016. After that, the company was acquired by Microsoft Studios in June 2018 and has since been a part of it.

Recently, Naila Hadjas, the PR and Community Developer at Compulsion Games, sat down for an interview with, in which she talked about the company’s current project and future plans. Particularly, she revealed the company’s upcoming third-person single-player game with a narrative experience that’s currently in development.

When asked about the objective that Compulsion Games wants to achieve with the upcoming game, she replied, “I think we give ourselves a little time to learn. It’s our first game with Microsoft and we’re learning a lot. We have doubled the workforce and we are adapting to it. The goal is to expand our wacky universe, to continue to make our mark in video games as a studio that likes to make unique games, in little-used settings. For now, that’s our goal. Pursue our ‘legacy’, our heritage, while remaining true to ourselves.”

Naila Hadjas further told that this project had started only a few months after the release of We Happy Few and has been in development since early 2019. “With our new game, a narrative, third person, story game, I don’t think we need any feedback. It’s not like a rogue-like where you replay it multiple times and you need data to make sure the experience is fun,” she said.

When asked whether Compulsion Games plans to move to Unreal Engine 5 for its upcoming game like other companies associated with Xbox Game Studios, she did not provide any confirmation but told that both We Happy Few and Contracts were made in Unreal Engine 4, so we could assume that the upcoming game would also run on the same engine.

Naila Hadjas also remained silent when asked about where the company is in terms of the development of its upcoming game. “I can’t answer too much because you never really know what’s going to happen. We are in full development. We are in full swing, hand in hand, on the ‘hard’ stages of the project,” she told.

So, the previous rumours of Compulsion Games working on a new third-person game have been confirmed. Unfortunately, there’s still no release date that we have at the moment. Hopefully, we receive more information from the company as it moves forward with development.
