Sony has recently released its FY2022 consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2023, and it reveals statistics about the giant conglomerate’s various sectors. One of its biggest triumphs includes a massive boost to its PlayStation monthly active users, rising by millions. The monthly active users have grown by a huge amount of 2.3 million in March since the same month in the last fiscal year, stunning gamers in the process.

The number of monthly active users for PS as a whole increased 2.3 million accounts compared to the same month of the previous fiscal year in March,” lists the financial report.

As of March 31st, PlayStation Network boasted over 108 million monthly active users, as revealed in the official documents. On the other hand, PlayStation Plus subscribers stood at 47.4 million.

Moreover, the profits from the PS5 being shelved in retail stores have started to become evident to Sony, as more users are buying the consoles because of the arrival of more stock since the second half of last year. Additionally, third-party game sales have also overshadowed the threshold set in the last fiscal year in February and March.

The positive impact of increased PS5 sell-in has begun to appear in engagement metrics, with dollar based third-party software sales exceeding the same month of the previous fiscal year in February and March.”

In the last quarter, the PlayStation 5 sell-in was able to roll over a staggering 6.3 million units, which has been labeled as a “record high for PS consoles for the fourth quarter.” Over 19.1 million PS5 units were reportedly shipped during the full fiscal year, surpassing the original forecast of 19 million. According to the “Games & Network Services” section, the total sales amounted to 904 billion yen.

Sony's FY2022 consolidated financial results showing the total sales.
Sony’s FY2022 consolidated financial results show the total sales for FY2022 (year-on-year).

The total segment sales for FY2022 saw a notable gain of 33% year-on-year due to the rise in hardware sales (like the PlayStation 5) and first-party titles. Regardless, a decline in sales of non-first-party games and add-on content is also listed in the stats. On the other hand, the operating income saw a major decline of 96.1 billion yen (28%) due to a growth in game development costs and Sony’s recent buyouts, like Bungie, in the market.

The year-on-year forecast for the new FY2023 fiscal year mentions a whopping 255.4 billion yen, which is a 7% increase. An increase in sales of hardware and peripheral devices is also predicted. The operating income is also anticipated to see an increase of 8%, and the total forecast is thought to be 20 billion yen.

For software sales, God of War Ragnarok played a big role in boosting the first-party games sales for the FY2022 fiscal year. Sony and Bungie inflated to new horizons with a boost in dollar-based sales by 41% year-on-year. Moreover, the document also emphasized again that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is slated to release this fiscal year, likely to remove doubts from all the involved parties. More new IPs and games for PC are also planned.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 is the first current-gen console to overtake the set forecast, and it has been selling like hotcakes ever since the stocks were replenished globally. The current-gen console was able to outsell the PlayStation 4 in the first 29 months since their respective launch despite the lack of stock during the first two years.
