  • The PS5 has dominated despite the supply chain issues that have only recently ceased. It was the best-selling console in terms of units and dollars in both March and 2023.
  • The Resident Evil 4 remake was the best-selling entry for the month in dollar sales. It is the third best-selling game for 2023, as it is dominated by Hogwarts Legacy at the top spot.
  • Premium hardware spending declined this year in terms of year-on-year, while video game hardware spending increased by 10% when compared to March 2022.

The PlayStation 5 has proven to be a staggering success, and it is once again reflected by the latest sales data that has been released. According to March 2023 US Video Game Market data from Circana, Sony’s current-gen device has managed to surpass its predecessor in terms of sales based on a time-aligned basis. In other words, the PlayStation 5 has managed to garner more sales than PS4 in the first 29 months since their respective launch.

Sony’s PS5 has been attributed with driving the console market last month in the US, as per the data shared by Mat Piscatella, the Executive Director and Video Game Industry Analyst at Circana, on his Twitter handle. The PS5 was the best-selling console in units and dollars for both March as well as 2023 year-to-date.

The new sale numbers for the PlayStation 5 are particularly remarkable when compared with the PS4 because there were a lot of supply chain issues for Sony’s current-gen console, and it has still managed to catch up. In other alluring news, the PS5 has also managed to break a long-standing new individual unit record for the PlayStation brand in March by surpassing the little giant, PlayStation Portable.

Coming toward the video game sales for March 2023 US Video Game Market data from Circana, the former NPD group, the Resident Evil 4 remake was the best-selling entry for the month in dollar sales. It was soon able to climb its way as the best-selling entry of 2023 year-to-date. The AAA Wizarding World simulator, Hogwarts Legacy, occupied the second spot in March and has retained its status as the best-selling game of 2023 to date.

According to Mat, premium game spending had a decline this year in terms of year-on-year because of tough competition with last year’s March 2022. Last year saw eight major game releases in March, and Elden Ring still dominated the game sales charts in March 2022.

On the other hand, more people spent money on buying video game console hardware and related accessories, seeing an increase of 10 percent in contrast to March 2022 and gathering 566 million USD. For instance, the PlayStation 5 Dual Sense Edge Wireless Controller Black ranked as the month’s best-selling controller in dollar sales.

The overall Year-to-date hardware spending has grown by 21% in contrast to the same time span in 2022, boasting $1.5 billion. As per Mat, this is the second-highest video game hardware spending for March in United States history, overshadowed only by the $680 million reached in March 2021.

The new data for March 2023 highlighting the software and hardware sales in the United States has proven that the world is slowly returning to pre-pandemic levels. Mat has noted that big video games have sold well, just not in enough numbers yet, and engagement has also started to increase after two years of constraints that halted the gaming industry. Subscription spending is also slowing, as per the recorded data.

Because of the steadily accumulating sales, the PlayStation 5 was able to once again become the best-selling console in the US in March. The renowned console only recently hailed the status of becoming the best-selling console to date in the United States. It boasted similar status back in November of last year.
