The CEO of the Xbox brand, Phil Spencer, appeared in an interview with the notable gaming journalist Stephen Totilo over on Game File and commented that the company has no plans to abandon physical games entirely. The clarification was made amidst rising concerns in the gaming company regarding the decline of physical media. However, Phil does not want to adopt an extreme approach that caters to either side completely.
We are supportive of physical media, but we don’t have a need to drive that disproportionate to customer demand. […] But I will say our strategy does not hinge on people moving all-digital. And getting rid of physical, that’s not a strategic thing for us,” said Phil Spencer.
During the interview, Phil Spencer explicitly stated that Xbox wants to chase the trends followed by consumers. In other words, he elucidated that most gamers purchase games digitally, and it plans to keep up with the trend without abandoning physical games.
We ship games physically and digitally, and we’re really just following what the customers are doing. And I think our job in running Xbox is to deliver on the things that a majority of the customers want. And right now, a majority of our customers are buying games digitally.”

Additionally, the company CEO explains that the cost of a disk drive in consoles piles up compared to the lower suppliers and demands for physical games in the industry. It makes the endeavor more expensive for the company to launch a console with a disk drive. As a result, Xbox wants to strike the perfect harmony.
