PC Wins “Ultimate Hardware of All Time” At Golden Joystick Awards

Did PC just win the console versus PC gaming war?

The video game industry has only been around for almost 50 years and has changed significantly since then. From the release of the Magnavox Odyssey in 1972 all through the current-generation consoles, gaming hardware has gone through many transformations, for better or worse. However, while the companies like Sony Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Corporation have been very invested in the console market, PC has always been the utmost choice for consumers in terms of gaming.

So, it comes as no surprise that the winner of the “Ultimate Hardware of All Time” award during the recently hosted Golden Joystick Awards 2021 is none other than PC. Other platforms, like the PlayStation 2 and Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), are, of course, worthy contestants but when it comes to gaming hardware, PC is just incomparable. However, these weren’t the only contestants. A complete list of all the nominees for the award is mentioned below;

  • PC
  • PlayStation 2
  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation
  • Xbox 360
  • Wii
  • Dreamcast
  • Nintendo 64
  • Nintendo DS
  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • Nintendo GameCube
  • Sega Genesis (Mega Drive)
  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Amiga 500
  • Sega Saturn
  • ZX Spectrum
  • Commodore 64
  • Atari 2600

Furthermore, the award was accepted by none other than the mascot of PC gaming himself, Gabe Newell, the President of Valve Corporation. “Gamers and developers have benefited enormously from the relentless innovation in PC gaming hardware,” he said in his acceptance speech. It’s true; as PC hardware continues to revolutionise, so does the video game industry as a whole. Obviously, consoles use similar hardware, so it makes sense that the innovations in PC hardware are correlated with the innovations in consoles.

The “Ultimate Hardware of All Time” award is meant to celebrate the video game industry’s existence for almost 50 years now. We’ve come a long way since then and if one thing’s for certain, it’s that gaming hardware, whether for PC or consoles, will continue to become better with time.
