Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion’s Strong Sales Continue In Asia

Some franchises in the gaming world are so big that no matter what they release, it’s successful. One such series is Final Fantasy from Square Enix, whose games besides the mainline launches also do big numbers.

We saw that earlier this year with Strangers of Paradise, and continue to do so with the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion.

A remaster of a prequel originally made for the PSP, opened to positive reviews from fans and critics alike. The ability to play the classic game on modern consoles resounded with the fans. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion’s numbers further prove its success as it continues to sell like hotcakes in Asia.

Pierre485 on Twitter aggregated the weekly gaming charts of South Korea and Taiwan recently. One common theme in both of these countries is that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is flying high. The game is in the top 5 in both of these countries and is performing above expectations.

In South Korea, Bahamut GNN cooperating with MediaCreate published this week’s video game sales. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion caught everyone’s eye as it made the top 5 in the country. Even though this performance isn’t even the best in the region, it’s still competent. 

The Callisto Protocol, a big AAA title, was No.5 in South Korea last week. Hence, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion’s PlayStation 5 version overtook a big name to get to this position. It is only below the widely successful Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Animal Crossing Horizons.

In Taiwan, the game really shined and has outperformed one of the biggest releases of 2022. Bahamut GNN also reported the video game sales in Taiwan and the remaster of the prequel is again doing well. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion takes up all of the top 3 spots in the Taiwan charts ending the week of December 18.

At No.1, is the PlayStation 5 version of the game, followed by the PlayStation 4 variant at No.2. Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion on Nintendo Switch holds the No.3 spot, rounding out the top 3. God of War Ragnarok is at No.4, meaning the remaster beat the game’s sales this week. 

Ring Fit Adventure closes out the top 5 of the weekly Taiwan charts. One thing to note in these two sales charts is which console the prequel’s remake is doing well on. When you notice it, the PlayStation 5 version of the game is selling the highest. 

This is a positive indication for the future of the PS5 as most people are buying new games on the next-gen console. PlayStation 5 also had a great holiday season, so maybe the console is finally restocking around the world. Hopefully, this shortage is no more by next year as everyone wants to get their hands on a PlayStation 5.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion has also been doing well in Japan as we already know. It sold over 150,000 copies at retail in the country and took the respectable No.4 and No.5 spots. Again the PlayStation 5 variant was above the PS4 one, further strengthening the console’s performance. 

Besides this brilliant display in Japan, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion broke another record in the country. With its launch week sales, the game became the biggest opening for any Final Fantasy spin-off since 2014. It is the first game since 2014’s Final Fantasy Explorers to score such numbers for a spin-off in the series.

Game Data Library reported this piece of news, and there is another interesting tidbit in it. With digital, the game has sold over 200k according to the aggregator. This makes it the 3rd biggest Final Fantasy launch in the last 10 years, only behind Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XV.

So, when you put all of this into perspective, it’s safe to say Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion has exceeded expectations.
