In the history of entertainment media, only a few intellectual properties have truly stood the test of time. Micky Mouse, Spider-Man, and Superman are the rare characters that are popular almost a century after their creation. One such character also has this longevity but is a bit different from these properties: King Kong.
Since his first appearance in 1933, the Skull Island giant has been in countless movies, books, and everything else. However, it has only made a few appearances in the gaming industry with the last game being 2005’s move tie-in.
Now, the character is making its return to the medium, with GameMill Entertainment announcing an original King Kong game is in the works.
Major Takeaways
- A new King Kong project is coming from GameMill Entertainment and publishing rights owner DeVito ArtWorks.
- It will release on several platforms and is based on the Skull Island storyline.
- Nothing else is public about the game as of yet and we will have to wait for more announcements.
Licensing Magazine broke this news to the masses. In what seems like a press release, the publication tells us about this new King Kong project in development.
DeVito ArtWorks, the company that owns the publication rights to the gorilla look-alike, have partnered with GameMill Entertainment for this project.
Joe DeVito, the owner of DeVito ArtWorks, is responsible for creating the Skull Island storyline. According to the article, that is what this game will be based on. Without getting into the messy King Kong rights history, DeVito has been working with Merian C. Cooper’s estate since 1996.
He published the Skull Island origin and has been handling other rights like TV shows alongside the creator’s estate. So, Joe Devito most probably holds the rights GameMill Entertainment needs to make a King Kong game. While talking about this project, he said:
I could not be more excited to be working with GameMill Entertainment’s talented team that will provide both King Kong fans and gamers the chance to experience King Kong’s primordial world in a gamified way.”
DeVito is right about GameMill’s talent, as the studio has made some really fun games. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is their most popular recent release, and the studio specializes in such titles. It mostly makes games on kid-friendly IPs like Frozen, Cartoon Network, Goosebumps, and much more.
Hence, it will be very interesting to see how this translates to a project like King Kong. Whether the studio makes this a cartoonish title with fun vibes or a serious game with action elements, only time will tell. Meanwhile, Andy Koehler, SVP of business development for GameMill said,
We are thrilled to partner with DeVito ArtWorks’ King Kong of Skull Island and look forward to expanding and bringing the iconic Kong to life in gaming. We have a long track record of bringing some of the world’s top franchises to life in the video game space.”
Another good news from this announcement is the platforms it will release on. The start of the article says it will release on a “range of video game systems.” Hence, we’ll probably see this upcoming King Kong game on both PC and consoles.
Nothing specific has been disclosed about the project by either GameMill or DeVito ArtWorks. We have no idea about the genre, the specific platforms, or the release date as of now. Therefore, it is going to be a long wait before we see this in action.
King Kong is getting a new Disney+ series via another DeVito ArtWorks license. The giant recently made an appearance in Call of Duty Warzone, but that has been the only time we have seen it in the medium for the last 18 years.
Hopefully, the King Kong Skull Island game releases soon, as we can’t wait to smash things with the monster.
