Story Highlights
- A new Baldur’s Gate 3 mod introduces a polished over-the-shoulder camera.
- The perspective makes exploration feel closer to Dragon Age and other third-person RPGs.
- This remains an unofficial PC modification rather than a new camera option from Larian Studios.
Baldur’s Gate 3 can finally be played from a proper over-the-shoulder perspective, thanks to a new third-person camera mod by Relysia.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Gets A Proper Third-Person Camera

Baldur’s Gate 3 already lets players bring its camera relatively close to their characters, but it was never designed like a traditional third-person RPG. Its standard perspective remains elevated, giving players a clear view of party positioning, environmental hazards, and the battlefield.
Relysia, a known modder, has implemented an over-the-shoulder camera perspective which makes Baldur’s Gate 3 feel much closer to modern video games. Additionally, the mod offers further customization options on where to place the camera and how far from the character. The following are the details about the mod:
- Adds an immersive, customizable over-the-shoulder camera view.
- The camera stays closely attached to your character for tight tracking (unlike the original mod where the character drifts to the sides of the screen when moving left or right).
- Dynamic FOV that smoothly increases when running to give a sense of speed.
- Automatic camera height adjustments when crouching or standing up.
- Camera height dynamically adjusts based on the character’s height.
- Best experienced with a controller, but also works great on keyboard & mouse (using the WASD Character Movement mod).
It also gives players a much closer look at party members, armor sets, spell effects, and the absurd amount of environmental detail.
Considering how cinematic Baldur’s Gate 3 already is, this viewpoint feels surprisingly natural.
It Changes Exploration More Than Combat
The mod uses an over-the-shoulder presentation. That is an important distinction: this is not merely the default camera pulled closer to the ground.
Exploring from behind your character can make Baldur’s Gate 3 feel more immediate. Locations that were originally viewed like tactical maps instead become spaces you physically move through, which should be particularly appealing to players coming from action RPGs.
Combat is a different matter. Baldur’s Gate 3 relies heavily on sightlines, elevation, area-of-effect indicators, and party positioning. A close camera cannot provide the same tactical awareness as the standard view, so the mod automatically pulls back the camera during combat and turn-based mode.
In other words, the mod changes the presentation, not the underlying turn-based systems. Do not expect Baldur’s Gate 3 to suddenly control or fight like The Witcher 3.
This Is Still An Unofficial PC Experience
Players should remember that this third-person mode is a community-made modification, not an official feature released by Larian Studios. Compatibility could therefore be affected by game patches, other installed mods, or changes to Baldur’s Gate 3’s scripting and camera systems.
Even with those caveats, it is an impressive transformation. Baldur’s Gate 3 was already one of the most immersive modern RPGs; seeing Faerûn from a true third-person perspective gives players a compelling reason to begin yet another campaign.
