Story Highlights
- As per Konami, the Metal Gear franchise has now sold over 60 million units globally in its history.
- The series has sold almost 700,000 copies from September to June, that too without a new game in the last five years.
- Konami is planning to release a Collection based on the series this October with the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake already announced, the franchise’s future looks bright.
In a new corporate update, Konami has revealed that since its launch in 1987, the Metal Gear series has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. In the last nine months alone, the franchise has further sold almost 700,000 copies and that is without a single new game in the last five years. Hence, even with no mainline entry in nearly a decade, the Konami franchise is still going strong and setting new records.
Konami uncovered these new stats in a new article about its Digital Entertainment business, which is a rather boring read about how it’s expanding its IPs to create new experiences. According to the business update, the Metal Gear series has now reached 60 million cumulative sales as of June 2023, which is a small jump from the 59.3 million sales figure reported in September 2022.
Considering how Konami hasn’t released a new title in the beloved series since 2018’s Metal Gear: Survive, selling almost a million copies in under a year is pretty impressive. With such strong legs, it’s not hard to see why the Japanese developer is extensively planning out the future of the series created by the legendary Hideo Kojima.

Konami Open To Consider Remaking More Metal Gear Titles If There’s Enough Demand
The Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol.1, which contains the first three games in the Solid series and some other titles is set to release on October 24, 2023, for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC. In addition, Vol.2 of this collection is apparently already in the works and leaks have even potentially uncovered the titles this second part will contain.
Besides these collections, a new major entry in the form of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is also in the works for next-gen consoles and PC. According to Konami, the upcoming title is going to be a remake of the 2004 original and will closely follow the narrative of that game, bringing Naked Snake back as the focus just like the original.
Hence, with new mainline titles and multiple collections about to launch in the next few years, the Metal Gear franchise is certainly going to boost its 60 million sales number even more. Hopefully, Konami keeps giving us new games in the stealth action series and if all goes well, even makes a sequel to 2015’s MGS V.
