Epic Has Filed A Trademark For The ‘Epic Games Megaverse’

The company is partnering with Spire Animation to create it's own Metaverse.

Virtual reality systems feel like the future of technology. Many companies are getting in on the trend of virtual worlds. Facebook has already begun with its metaverse. So, other tech giants are also starting to produce their versions of the metaverse. Epic is the next developer building its virtual universe.

Epic has filed a trademark for their very own ‘Epic Games Megaverse.’ The company filed this trademark at the end of 2021. The filing lists many goods and services that the virtual world may have. So, it covers a lot of bases. This upcoming world from Epic will be named after this filing. But, the trademark is just the start of this new world.

Epic recently bought the Spire Animation Studios. The Los Angeles company will build the virtual world for Epic. Spire will use Unreal Engine 5 and set up virtual animations. This will form the basis of Epic’s Megaverse. Their CTO Kim Libreri also spoke about this:

“The talented team at Spire has decades of experience and their work has captivated audiences around the world with heartfelt storytelling and inspiring characters. They are at the cutting edge of animation and together we will push the state of the art in the metaverse entertainment.”

This is a pretty clear indication of Epic‘s plans for the metaverse. They own Fortnite, one of the most prominent digital products right now. So, it is no surprise that someone as massive as them will be looking to develop their social world.

Epic also has a lot of backing on this project. They announced a budget of $1 billion for their metaverse last year. Sony invested heavily into this sum. The makers of PlayStation have given $200 Million to Epic for this virtual reality.

“Their investment will help accelerate our work around building connected social experiences in Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys, while empowering game developers and creators with Unreal Engine, Epic Online Services and the Epic Games Store,” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said at the time.

Epic has a good base for their metaverse project. A world-famous IP coupled with significant backing is an excellent place to start your virtual universe. But, they have a lot of competition, with even Xbox looking to hop on this bandwagon. So, no matter what everyone’s virtual world looks like, one thing is for sure, this is the future of technology.
