CD Projekt Red Denies Any Acquisitions; Persists To Remain An Independent Studio

The Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher dev is not interested in acquisitions.

Story Highlights

  • The CEO of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kicinski, has denied rumors of any acquisitions in a new interview.
  • The studio plans to remain independent and does not want to come under the umbrella of any major company.
  • He claimed that the team has worked hard to reach their current position and plans to grow more.

CD Projekt Red has emerged as one of the most famous studios in the AAA gaming scene since the last decade. Many notable conglomerates are often eyeing down such talent from time to time. However, the CEO of the studio, Adam Kicinski, has now solidified its stance on future acquisitions and any potential buyouts. In a new interview with Parkiet, Adam claimed that CDPR is not interested in securing any more purchases in the future.

At the moment, we have no plans for acquisitions. Of course, we are open to ideas that could accelerate our strategy. But we are not interested in acquisitions that would simply integrate acquired companies into our group and consolidate their financial results. We do not see the value in that.” says the CEO. Additionally, The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077 franchise dev wants to stay clear of falling under the umbrella of a larger conglomerate. The CEO clarifies that “independence is really appealing” and touts it as another word for freedom. CD Projekt Red would have to abide by the rules of its new owner if it were to be purchased for a large sum of money. The devs are supposedly satisfied, and the studio wants to continue evolving over the years.

We are not interested in being incorporated into some larger entity. We have worked all our lives to achieve the position we have now. And we believe that in a few years we will be even bigger and even stronger. We have ambitious plans, and we are strongly passionate about what we do. We value independence.”

As a result, many gamers on forums online have wondered whether a hostile takeover is possible. CD Projekt Red is a public company, after all, and over 66 percent of its stocks are owned by other entities. Rest assured, certain rules already in place would prevent such a situation from occurring. The CEO has clarified about any potential hostile takeovers. It would be hard to pull off for anyone against a studio like CDPR.

We have always had a clear position, which is also supported by the regulations included in the articles of association (they are intended to prevent hostile takeovers).”

While answering another query, Adam also acknowledges the struggles CD Projekt Red has faced in the past. Nevertheless, the studio is feeling safe with the amount of cash it possesses to invest in its projects. In other words, it is confident in working on several major entries at any given moment. CDPR will supposedly not have to rely on any outside party for additional finances.
