Epic Games Store Leak Teases New Subscription Services For The Platform

Epic Games has been working hard to make its gaming storefront stand a chance against the behemoth that is Steam. The biggest innovation it brings is arguably the generous offering of free games to appeal to the masses, but now it might bring a notable change to its strategy. The Reddit user u/PCMachinima on the r/EpicGamesPC subreddit has found that the Epic Games Store could soon get subscription services in the future.

The user discovered the following tidbits by allegedly datamining the Epic Games Store website. These findings include strings of code that hint towards the possible addition of subscription services. EA Play has been directly hinted to be one of the subscription services in one of the lines in the code. “Play EA’s best games as much as you want,” reads a line.

Timed trials are included as part of various subscriptions. EA Play could let you play 10 hours of a game regardless of whether it’s included in the subscription. The rest of the details reveal that various subscription services on the EGS will offer multiple payment plans. 

Epic Games Store will reportedly feature monthly and annual membership periods, with discounts for specific subscriptions. For example, having an EA Play subscription could grant you an extra 10% off from the roster. Additionally, these subscriptions can be stacked for an unknown number of months and years. “Get access to a vault of games, play exclusive {0} hr trials, and get {1} off on EA digital purchases,” reads another line.

We will also likely see subscription services by other giants like Ubisoft, but only one was referenced in the shared code. The overall subscription service feature appears to resemble Steam completely. All in all, datamined details hardly ever tend to be proven false.
