Despite Coming Out A Long Time Ago, These PS4 Games Still Hold Up Graphically

The PlayStation 4 has remained outright monumental across its lifespan, though that’s not to say the console is anywhere near done for at the moment. Many new titles and expansions, including Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree are coming out on the PlayStation 4 as well, so it’s safe to say the system is far from flatlining anytime soon. 

However, it is worth mentioning that the PlayStation 4 first came out all the way back in 2013, and more than a decade has passed since that year. During all this time, many games on this unit have come and gone, but only an anointed few have managed to stand out in terms of looking good even to this day. Not bad for an 11-year-old console, hunh? 

The PlayStation 4 Is Home To Some Of The Best Games In The Business

I’ve decided to cherry-pick specific games that look nothing short of amazing on the PlayStation 4 in the day and age we live in today. They happen to be worth revisiting, or picking up anew if you haven’t come across them before. Oh, and if you think a game deserves to be on here, feel free to contribute down in the comments section. 

1. The Order 1886 

Back when Ready at Dawn unveiled and subsequently released The Order 1886, I, and I’m sure many others, were taken aback by how good this game looked at the time. Nothing compared to it visually at the time—it was that darn spectacular. What’s more is, if you were to play this game today, you would not be able to point out anything that would make The Order 1886 feel dated. 

It’s also remake-worthy in my opinion. The world and the concept presented in this third-person shooter have a ton of potential and combine that with some polish to the gameplay and runtime, and you’ll be golden. 

2. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Another title that is big on visuals on the PlayStation 4 is the ninth main rendition in the Metal Gear franchise, The Phantom Pain. This one came out in the same year as The Order 1886 and somehow managed to hold its ground as the best-looking stealth game even 10 years later. You have to give it props for that, if not for its surreal cast, gameplay, and narrative action. 

3. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Another PlayStation 4 exclusive that’s now on PC as well is the final iteration in the legendary Uncharted franchise, Uncharted 4. No game in this series has looked better and played this well than this one, and rightfully so.

It came out a year after The Order 1886 and made waves across the industry shortly afterward, becoming a PlayStation best-seller through and through for its gameplay, visuals, and story-driven explosive action. 

4. God Of War (2018) 

2018 was a magnificent year, because it gave new life to a fan-favorite PlayStation franchise—God of War. The reboot of the series saw Kratos turning another page in the book of his life, and all of a sudden, he’s got a kid as well. This is an extremely enjoyable action-adventure with stellar graphical quality, diverse combat, and a fantastic storyline that keeps you hooked all the way to the end. 

5. Infamous Second Son

Sucker Punch Productions is yet to give the Infamous franchise a makeover, but until that happens, know that Infamous Second Son along with its prequel standalone title Infamous First Light are two fantastic duo of open-world games that you can’t help but enjoy. Talk about chaotic mayhem, supernatural powers, and the liberty to roam the in-game world at will without breaking a sweat. 

6. Batman: Arkham Knight

Not even the juggernaut Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 can beat the Batman: Arkham franchise’s best game (arguably) when it boils down to which game has the higher Metascore. The latter’s not Knight, but for this article, I had to make a point.

Batman: Arkham Knight, however, sports the best visuals as compared to its other counterparts for a PlayStation 4 game, not to mention the rest of the stuff that makes it outright brilliant, including a dark atmospheric world that feels alive, and the sheer authority of getting to play as The Caped Crusader himself. 

7. Dying Light

Although Dying Light 2 is out and dropkicking, many would see eye to eye with the notion that it does not beat the original. The first Dying Light is really something else. Perhaps it’s the desolation and misery of Harran that makes it a cut above, or the way Techland executed its mechanics — I’m not sure — but one thing’s for certain, the first-person zombie slayer has a lot going for itself in the graphics department.
