Doom: The Dark Ages Will Return To Classic Doom Formula, Confirms Creative Director

The essence of the original Doom experience returns.

Story Highlights

  • Doom: The Dark Ages’ creative director says the game is the spiritual successor to Doom 2016.
  • The upcoming FPS will cling to the original formula and focus on huge arenas and slower action.
  • While Doom Eternal focused on verticality, the new title will return to horizontal movement.

In an interview with Games Radar, Hugo Martin, the creative director of Doom: The Dark Ages, claims it is more of a spiritual successor to the original game instead of Doom Eternal. In other words, the gameplay will be inspired by the formula that fans grew to love and enjoy over the years instead of the controversial innovations of the last entry.

We’re making strafing-to-aim a thing again. You’ll be weaving between projectiles, just like you did in the original Doom, to deliver that Super Shotgun blast to the chest… It almost creates this three-dimensional ‘shoot ’em up’ puzzle that you’re weaving your way through,” said Hugo.

Hugo claims that while the last title was focused on verticality, Doom: The Dark Ages will emphasize horizontal movements and slower projectiles that can be dodged to ensure the authentic feel of the original experience.

We have more demons than we ever have before. […] The tech is really allowing us to do some of the biggest spaces and biggest AI, and the weapons feel like the most powerful you’ve ever held in a Doom game.”

Doom: The Dark Ages Will Benefit From Slower Yet Satisfying Action

Hugo confirms that we’ll be killing more demons than we have ever before. However, the arenas will also be flatter and diverse, allowing for a lot of enemies on screen to be gutted by the all-new Shield Saw we saw in the gameplay reveal. On the other hand, the protagonist will feel “heavier, more powerful, and grounded,” like in Doom 2016.
