Sony Tightens Social Media Rules as Disc Backlash Grows

Sony reportedly tightens social media rules for PlayStation staff as backlash grows over PS5 discs, physical ownership and digital game distribution.

Story Highlights

  • Sony has reportedly tightened social media guidelines for PlayStation staff, claims Alanah Pearce.
  • The restrictions are said to follow growing criticism concerning PS5 discs and physical games.
  • The exact rules remain unclear, so claims about their scope should be treated cautiously.

Sony has reportedly imposed stricter social media guidelines on PlayStation employees as criticism surrounding physical games and PS5 discs continues to build.

The report comes from former Studio Santa Monica writer Alanah Pearce, who stated that employees at PlayStation are under strict guidelines on what they can comment on. Sher further stated that the current backlash was “no surprise” to them, meaning they were aware before the announcement.

PlayStation Staff Reportedly Face Tighter Restrictions

According to Alanah Pearce, Sony has introduced strict social media guidelines amid the ongoing disc backlash. This restriction is applied to its first-party studios and how much they can comment on the current ongoing issue. Credits to Insider Gaming for the following transcript:

“People working at PlayStation first-party studios told me that Sony had the strictest social media guidelines for this particular thing that they’ve ever seen issued. Sony does somewhat regularly tell employees what they can or can’t say about certain things. I was under a lot of guidelines when I was working on God of War: Laufey. I still am, and they did send me guidelines regarding what I could say on the day that the game was announced,” she said.

“In this instance, it is apparently the strictest the employees I spoke to have ever seen regarding public communications. They would only have done this if they knew it was going to be an enormous PR issue. This is no surprise to them.“ –

However, none of this establishes the exact wording of Sony’s internal policy. It is therefore unclear whether employees have been told to avoid the subject entirely, limit personal commentary, or simply follow tighter approval procedures.

Sony’s Digital Push Is Already Under Scrutiny

PlayStation Digital Push
Sony’s all-digital future looks bleak for consumers.

The reported restrictions arrive while Sony continues promoting digital games despite physical-media backlash. For players concerned about preservation, ownership, resale, or long-term access, this is not merely a preference between a box and a download.

Physical games can still depend on patches and online services, of course. Even so, discs generally offer consumers more flexibility than purchases locked completely to an account and storefront. Additionally, another major issue is Sony’s authority to remove digital content from your account at any given time, making the all-digital push all the more doubtful.

The company’s wider PlayStation strategy remains under similar scrutiny, particularly after a Sony executive acknowledged that it needs to improve its lineup of original IPs. In that environment, communication matters almost as much as the underlying business decision.
