CDPR Reportedly Working With River City Girls Devs for 2.5D Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Brawler

CD Projekt Red reportedly partnered with WayForward to develop a 2.5D brawler based on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Internally codenamed Project Gemini, the unannounced game allegedly featured multiplayer elements alongside rollback networking technology.

However, neither CD Projekt Red nor WayForward has officially announced the project. Its current status and whether it will ever reach players remains unclear.

Project Gemini Is Reportedly An Edgerunners Brawler

According to MP1st’s report, Project Gemini is being developed through a collaboration between CD Projekt Red and WayForward. The latter studio is particularly well-known for Shantae and River City Girls, making it a logical choice for an Edgerunners game built around 2.5D brawling.

The reported concept would have moved away from Cyberpunk 2077’s first-person RPG structure. Instead, Project Gemini seemingly focused on side-scrolling combat while retaining the setting, characters, and visual identity associated with the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime.

That is a promising combination on paper. Edgerunners already has the exaggerated action, distinctive cast, and neon-soaked environments needed for a fast arcade-style brawler.

Multiplayer And Rollback Were Part Of The Plan

Crucially, the leaked information is not limited to the game’s genre and developer. Project Gemini reportedly included multiplayer and rollback netcode, suggesting the brawler was designed to support more than a purely solo campaign as seen in the latest entry of River City Girls.

CDPR Has Not Announced The Game

The reported partnership has also been covered internationally as a rumor. For now, though, Project Gemini should be treated as an alleged internal project rather than a confirmed upcoming release.

No platforms, release window, price, or final roster have been announced. It is also unknown whether Project Gemini remains in active development, was an early prototype, or has since been shelved.

Either way, a multiplayer Edgerunners brawler from the River City Girls studio sounds like an unusually strong fit. We just need CDPR or WayForward to confirm it exists before getting carried away.
