Rockstar Support Confirms GTA 6 PS5 Retail Codes Are Region-Locked, Unlike Xbox

GTA 6 PS5 codes are region-locked, Rockstar Support says, while Xbox codes are not. Here’s what import buyers should check before buying one.

Story Highlights

  • Rockstar Support says GTA 6 retail codes for PS5 will be restricted to the region where they were purchased.
  • Xbox retail codes reportedly will not carry the same regional limitation.
  • PS5 players should ensure a code matches their PlayStation Network account before buying from another country.

Grand Theft Auto 6 retail codes will apparently work differently across PS5 and Xbox, and PlayStation players need to be particularly careful when importing a copy.

According to Rockstar Support, GTA 6 codes sold for PS5 will be region-locked, while codes for the Xbox version can be redeemed regardless of region. That difference could create a frustrating purchasing trap for players living in countries without official PlayStation Network support.

GTA 6 PS5 Codes Must Match Your Account Region

As spotted on the Rockstar Support page, PlayStation codes are region-locked and can only be redeemed on that region’s account. An account registered in another region would therefore be unable to redeem the code.

Previously, Rockstar had confirmed that GTA 6 will have no physical discs and retail copies will have a digital code instead. So, it’s important to check the code’s region before spending your money on any retail code.

Xbox codes will not have that restriction, as stated by Rockstar, making Microsoft’s version considerably easier to import or purchase while travelling.

On the same page, Rockstar also confirmed that GTA 6 digital codes will expire after 170 days in Japan.

In practical terms, PS5 owners should check the code’s intended country or region against their PSN account before spending any money. Creating another regional account may sometimes provide a workaround, but it complicates purchases, downloadable content, and account management.

Players In Unsupported PSN Regions Could Be Hit Hardest

The bigger concern is availability. The players in countries without official PlayStation Network access may struggle to redeem imported GTA 6 codes, even if local retailers sell them.

That creates an awkward situation for one of the most anticipated releases around. A boxed code may look like the simplest way to obtain the game, only for the redemption process to reject it because the buyer’s PSN account belongs to a different region.

Xbox players seemingly avoid this particular headache. However, buyers should still verify the product listing and redemption terms rather than assuming every retailer is selling a globally compatible code.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S
