The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Remake Is Going Toe-To-Toe With GTA 6 In November

Nintendo confirmed the release date during today’s Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, and the timing is no accident. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches November 5, putting it just two weeks ahead of GTA 6’s November 19 release rather than tucked safely away from it.

Exputer reported this collision back in August, when leaked amiibo listings hinted at a November release window months before Nintendo confirmed anything. It turns out the amiibo trail was right.

What’s Actually Changing In The Remake

This isn’t a simple visual upscale. Nintendo detailed a long list of changes alongside the release date:

• Every texture in the game has been rebuilt, load times are faster, and the game runs and sounds noticeably smoother throughout, now backed by a full symphonic orchestral score.
• Link can jump and sprint using newly added button commands, on top of improved camera control with the right stick.
• You can use the Ocarina accessory to play melodies in the game.
• Items can be swapped with a single button press instead of digging through menus.
• Every character Link meets is fully voiced through expanded cutscenes with considerably more dialogue than the original.
• The camera moves freely through remodeled locations packed with new detail.
• The day-night cycle now keeps running even inside towns, something the original never did.
• A new feature called Threads of Time lets players check their story progress and next objective at any time, with a tapestry that gradually fills in as the adventure continues.
• Load screens are staying, a deliberate choice Nintendo says preserves some of the original’s rhythm.
• Players can hum a song Link already knows into the Switch 2’s built-in microphone and he’ll play it back in-game.

Two physical ocarina accessories are also coming later this year: a genuinely playable ocarina and an electric version from HORI that plays notes or full songs at the press of a button.

Zelda Notes And The 40th Anniversary Hardware

The remake launches at $59.99 digitally and $69.99 physically, with the first physical print run getting special foil cover art while supplies last. A week earlier, on October 29, Nintendo releases a Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 console alongside matching Pro Controllers and a carrying case, all built around a Triforce design, matching leaked images of the hardware that surfaced a month before Nintendo made it official.

New Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo are following in 2027, unlocking retro-style masks in-game. The companion Zelda Notes app is getting Ocarina-specific features too, including a daily quiz with over 2,000 questions, a virtual playable ocarina on the phone itself, and a “Gossip Quest” mode that sends players hunting for real in-game locations using hint images.

Timed Two Weeks Before GTA 6

Two weeks is a tight window to go up against what’s expected to be the biggest release of the year, but it’s also enough space for dedicated fans to finish Ocarina of Time before GTA 6 eats the rest of November’s attention. Nintendo clearly isn’t worried about the overlap, and given the pedigree of a 99-on-Metacritic classic getting its first full remake, it’s a reasonable bet that plenty of players will be picking up both.
