Even Though Larian Is Done With Baldur’s Gate 3, I Believe The Game Deserves DLC

It just feels wrong to to send off one the best RPGs in recent memory without a bang.

Story Highlights

  • Larian Studios has mentioned Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t getting a DLC.
  • But considering how great the game is, I think it deserves additional content.
  • Especially because some parts of the game would highly benefit from a DLC, like the third act.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is easily one of the best games we’ve gotten in recent years. Much of this is thanks to the sheer amount of dedication Larian Studios has shown. Even months after release, the studio has been pumping out new updates for the game, including bug fixes, additional endings, and more. It’s clear the team deeply loves the title. And the community has returned that love through its consistent player count.

But there’s no denying that eventually, these updates are going to dry out as Larian Studios moves toward other projects. Previously, the studio mentioned that it already knows what its next project is going to be. The CEO made it clear that a Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC isn’t in the works, and neither is Baldur’s Gate 4. Larian is working on an entirely different thing for now.

And I can’t help but feel like that’s a tad disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, the studio has gone above and beyond with its updates. But that’s precisely why I want to stick around more in the world Larian has created, exploring even more areas in a potential DLC. Games like this come around once in a decade if that. So while Larian might be done with Baldur’s Gate 3, here’s why I think the game deserves a DLC.

  • About the Author: Danish Bukhari has a combined playtime of over 200+ hours in RPG titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring, making him highly knowledgeable on the subject.

Some Characters Need A Better Ending

While it’s fine to not have everyone riding off into the sunset, it does feel wrong that certain characters, like Karlach, don’t have a single good ending. Fans were noticeably upset when it turned out, that the best option for her was to go to literal hell. Either that, or she can just straight-up die. Larian helped to resolve this by adding a few new endings. But the fan sentiments regarding these aren’t great either. Since they are far from happy.

How can you not say Karlach is the best companion..

Adding in a DLC could help alleviate some of these complaints, by giving characters like Karlach a happier conclusion. And it’s not just about fans being upset at a sad ending. The thing is, much of Karlach’s journey involves her wanting to fix her heart. The story makes you think she’ll discover a way to do this in the end. So the fact that you’re left hanging felt a bit disappointing.

Plus, having DLC content will also allow players a bit more time to play around with characters like Minthara, Jaheira, and Minsc. These three don’t join your party until Act 2. Or in Minsc’s case, until the third, and final act. By the time you get around to enjoying them, it almost feels like the game is at its end. Adding in DLC content would allow for more fun interactions for players who enjoy these companions

The DLC Could Help Address Issues With The Third Act

While Baldur’s Gate 3 is genuinely an amazing game, there’s no denying the game’s third act is one of its weaker segments. Players have complained about the pacing in the third act to be quite off, with it being noticeably shorter than the other two. Some have found parts of it to be buggy, and just generally boring too. While Larian has done much to address the complaints about the bugs, there isn’t much they can do about the boredom.

ACT 3 IS JUST BAD.

This is where a potential DLC comes in. By adding more stuff to the third act, with the DLC being an optional chunk of added content that players can do before the ending, it’ll help to minimize the issues players have with this part of the game. Larian Studios could also address some of the other pain points people have about other areas of the game, making the DLC the best and most finished version of BG 3 there is.

Again, I’ve got to re-iterate that the game is amazing as is too. But knowing that there isn’t going to be a Baldur’s Gate 4, made by Larian any time soon, just makes me want BG 3 to be as close to literal perfection as possible. It might be a huge ask, but clearly, other fans want it too.

The Game Could Really Spice Up Its Evil Playthroughs With A DLC

Baldur’s Gate 3’s evil playthrough currently asks a lot from players. Not only do you need to shun away a good portion of your team, limiting their interactions. But you also don’t get the evil-aligned companion, Minthara, until quite later into the run. Fans who opted to make more sinister choices in Baldur’s Gate 3 have reported feeling a bit let down.

A DLC that gives evil players more to do, outside of the Durge run, would be really fun to see. I think Larian Studios should even go back and add ways to recruit the likes of Minthara a bit earlier. I’m sure there are tons of other changes like this that can be added, to make the overall experience of Baldur’s Gate 3 that much better. Without a DLC, we might never get these.
