1. Forza Horizon 5

Forza Horizon 5

Prepare to embark on an epic journey in Mexico in Forza Horizon 5 as you spearhead ground-breaking expeditions across the country with your fleet of over-the-top cars. What makes the in-game Forza Horizon stand out is its dynamically evolving environment. Weather changes shift from one paradigm to the other on the fly, and the transition takes place so seamlessly.

Deserts, jungles, momentous cities, canyons, snow-ridden volcanoes, and beaches—there’s no shortage of terrains in the world of Forza Horizon 5. There’s even a campaign system in the title that lets you experience the diverse stories of different characters. This makes us refer to the game as simply one of the best single-player campaign games on Xbox One.

Feel free to implement specialized races, challenges, stunts, and even more into your races to add more depth than ever. In addition, Xbox Game Studios have taken up car customization to a whole different level in Forza Horizon 5.

When it comes to the racing genre, no other franchise comes close to beating Forza. I can easily say that Forza Horizon 5 is by far the Best Racing Game on all platforms, not only Xbox One!

Pros:

  • Forza Horizon 5 graphics and world design is amazing.
  • The tracks have a lovely variety; each one is unique in its own way.
  • Amazing customization options are available.
  • There is a wide variety of vehicles.

Cons:

  • You can almost unlock anything with the microtransactions, which can resemble pay-to-win.
  • There may be numerous loadings, which can be very annoying.

2. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The second spot we’ve got for you here belongs to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It would’ve been a vile shame if a title of this stature couldn’t make it on the list. The 2015 Game Awards winner for Best Score and Music and Best Action/Adventure is an absolute treat to enjoy on the Xbox One, offering players the freedom they need to do more and be more as Solid Snake takes on the world. It truly doesn’t get any better than this.

Metal Gear Solid V brilliantly reinvents itself and improves upon previous entries in a dozen different aspects. The fact that it’s an open-world venture instead of featuring a typical style of gameplay is outright surprising. What’s even more baffling is how the developers—Konami Digital Entertainment—managed to pull it all off so brilliantly.

Everything from the combat and music down to the very pattern of enemy behavior, difficulty, level design, and replayability is just surreal in The Phantom Pain. If you’re someone who likes to take a good look at the environment while playing sandbox-oriented titles, you’re going to love the superb attention to detail that the creators of this marvel have incorporated in-game.

Pros:

  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain boasts a captivating storyline.
  • The visuals and design are impressive and stunning.

Cons:

  • Some side missions in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain can be dull and repetitive.
  • The lengthy cutscenes may not suit all players.

3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has won a bevy of accolades, including the Game of the Year award, and is still managing to go strong in 2024. CD Projekt Red has truly managed to pull something incredible with the latest entry in the Witcher franchise, offering the very best in terms of level design, open-world combat, and gorgeous visuals.

The in-game map featured by the developers isn’t anything to take lightly. It’s too huge to encompass all in a single play-through unless you’re a huge RPG fanatic who has nothing better to do for the remainder of the day. The plot of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt follows the tale of Geralt as he takes on a vicious adventure full of twists and thrills.

Where all other games falter and bow down in despair, this title rises above surreal heights, thereby redeeming its name as one of the best single-player games players can play on Xbox One. To talk about the insane replay value, there is seemingly an endless number of main missions, side quests, and other activities that indulge you inside the in-game world like never before in a Witcher game.

My Take: Out of all the single-player games I’ve tried on Xbox One, nothing comes close to The Witcher 3. The game was able to grip me thanks to its extremely interesting storyline, open-world, and characters. Not only that but Witcher 3 DLCs also blew me away!

Pros:

  • The design of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s background and environment is exceptional.
  • The game’s combat is satisfying and seamless, making for an enjoyable and engaging experience.
  • With its stunning and intricate graphics, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt comes to life.
  • As you progress through the game, there are numerous areas to explore in the vast open world.

Cons:

  • Long loading times can be tedious and unenjoyable.
  • Alchemy and crafting systems can be overwhelming.

4. Elden Ring

Elden Ring

Elden Ring picked up the 2022 Game of the Year award, which itself should be enough of a reason to play it. If you’ve got an Xbox One and are a fan of open-world, mystical adventures with a tad bit of difficulty to spice up the scenario, Hidetaka Miyazaki’s latest work of art is your best bet.

Elden Ring is the first to feature free-roam gameplay with a vast map and related map fragments to explore and unlock. There are several distinct regions to unlock, with each one being harder and more intuitive than the previous one. Combine this with the best bosses in the game, and you have a tip-top package of a game here.

Prepare to don a whole arsenal of weaponry, ranging from Katanas, Hammers, Swords, Axes, and Flails to Poleblades, Whips, Colossal Swords, and Greatswords on your character, and just go to town with them. There’s just no shortage of regard to the weaponry you can employ and rain death on your enemies.

When it comes to world design and size, Elden Ring surely hit the ball out of the park. Each region is beautifully crafted and is full of life. Also, players can sense that the world is interconnected, which is a recurring factor in Soulsborne games. Nevertheless, apart from its challenge, world design and music were a huge reason why I spent hundreds of hours in Elden Ring!

Pros:

  • Elden Ring has a very attractive open world.
  • Some of the areas are extremely immersive with detailed environments.
  • Elden Ring creates fascinating and enduring characters.
  • You get completely absorbed in the story thanks to the excellent writing.
  • Elden Ring’s combat system is distinct and a lot of fun.

Cons:

  • AI can be a bit dumb sometimes.

5. Dying Light

Dying Light
Dying Light

Dying Light isn’t just an endless affair with a world teeming with zombies. Another part that makes the venture even more exciting is the prevalence of human enemies with ulterior motives. That is to say, the game follows a fairly enticing storyline where you, the protagonist, going by the name of Kyle Crane, have to investigate a zombie-overrun city Harran.

You must push the boundaries to become the strongest warrior in the parkour arena slash ultimate zombie slayer game. And when you get the game’s in-game Grappling Hook, you don’t think about how fun Dying Light is going to be from now onwards.

The parkour-based game mechanic, when paired with the game’s distinct combat engine is perfect for the latest platform. Additionally, the reality that Techland created the game using a first-person viewpoint will help the IP have my applause.

Not to be left out lastly, the story of the first Dying Light has been followed by a major expansion known as The Following. It expands the open-world environment that the game into higher dimensions and broadens its scope toward driving vehicles and also. One could only imagine at this point all the different possibilities and enjoyable strategies to take advantage of your opponents.

Pros:

  • Offers an exciting and thrilling gaming experience.
  • Its combat mechanic is satisfying.
  • Dying Light offers a rich and compelling story.

Cons:

  • Dying Light’s control options require some time to become familiar with.
  • Dying Light contains a few animation issues.5

Takeaway

Despite the release of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One is still a relevant platform to pay heed to. It’s still holding up its massive gaming library which includes titles such as Elden Ring and Red Dead Redemption II. These two are some of the best single-player campaign games on Xbox One, and you have to try them out if you’re a solo-play enthusiast.

My personal favorite on the list has to be The Witcher 3. For me, no other game comes close to it. It offers everything a player needs in a single game. Rich storyline, immersive combat, beautifully crafted regions, and well-built characters!
