In most games, when the sniper is rushed, they can’t do much to defend themselves, and using a sniper at close range is very challenging and tricky. With Widowmaker, you can take out anybody who tries to rush you with relative ease.
When you aim with the sniper rifle, if you wait for a while, it charges up to 100 percent power. When it does, it deals significantly more damage. While the automatic fire mode is excellent and very helpful, using the weapon as a sniper rifle is essential as that is where you deal the maximum damage.
Widowmaker’s Abilities
What makes Overwatch special is that everything is designed around the hero. There is nothing that feels out of place here. All the abilities are designed to assist the sniper and damage dealer playstyle of Overwatch 2 Widowmaker. I will discuss what each of these does and how you can utilize them to their maximum potential.
Grappling Hook
Type | Ability |
Effect Type |
|
Move. Speed | Pulling Speed: 20 m/s |
Max Range | 20 meters |
Cooldown | 12 secs |
Widowmaker’s Grappling Hook in Overwatch 2 is a crucial and versatile ability. Primarily, it serves as a lifeline, allowing Widowmaker to escape threats from high-health enemies like tanks. The Grappling Hook provides swift and effective mobility, adhering to various surfaces.
- Its key utility lies in reaching optimal sniping positions quickly.
- Whether accessing windows or elevated spots, the Grappling Hook enhances Widowmaker’s positioning as a sniper.
- It’s recommended to use the ability judiciously due to its cooldown.
- While the cooldown is short, avoid spamming the move to ensure it’s available when needed and to avoid potential threats in unexplored corners.
Venom Mine
Type | Ability |
Effect Type | Arcing Projectile |
HP | 1 |
Damage |

Projectile Speed | 20 m/s |
Area Of Effect | 3 meters |

Cooldown | 15 secs |
Widowmaker’s Venom Mine in Overwatch 2 functions as a strategic trap, similar to a claymore but without instant lethality. Dealing damage over time, it has a maximum damage output of 75, proving valuable in tough situations for both the player and teammates.
- This approach, avoiding instant kills, contributes to a more positive gameplay experience.
- Planting the mine is straightforward—simply aim, and it adheres to the targeted spot.
- The Venom Mine serves a dual purpose, notifying players when to use the Grappling Hook for a quick escape.
The Ultimate Ability InfraSight
Type | Ultimate Ability |
Area Of Effect | Map Wide |
Casting Time | 0.64 secs |
Duration | 15 secs |
Ultimate Cost | 1,540 points |
Widowmaker’s ultimate ability in Overwatch 2, Infra-Sight, grants her real-time tracking of enemy players, essentially providing a team-wide wall-hack. This ability turns her into a damage-dealing support hero, making it one of the game’s best ultimates. Strategic use is vital, as wasting it leads to a significant cooldown. It’s advised to activate Infra-Sight during critical moments when swift enemy elimination is needed.
Although you need good aim to hit consistent shots, however, the most important thing is positioning. It is something that players cannot learn until they have experienced every single map playing as Widowmaker. I also recommend players to play Widowmaker only on maps where she provides the most advantage. Maps like Junkertown and King’s Row are an example where Widowmaker can unleash her true strength.
Summary
And that covers everything you need to know about Widowmaker. She remains one of the most skill-requiring characters in Overwatch, and once you master her, you will turn into an unstoppable force who deals massive damage and reveals the locations of your foes to your allies.
Overwatch 2 has received criticism for being mostly the same game the original Overwatch was. I think it adds the very best that the original game had to offer and makes the necessary changes. It is the Overwatch that you love, just free-to-play and very well-balanced.
What do you think about the game? Who do you mean? Which character do you think has the best story? Is Overwatch 2 a good sequel? Let me know all about it in the comments section below.
