1. New Map & Boroughs
The map size of Spider-Man 2018 has been effectively doubled in Spider-Man 2. Not only are the returning locations revamped with newer content, but there are actually two new locations from New York City, including Queens and Brooklyn, as shown in this tweet from Insomniac Games. These locations boast a new set of various landmarks that players can explore additionally.
2. Parrying Mechanic
According to the gameplay preview from this PlayStation blog post, dodging is now not the only defense against enemy attacks. Parrying has been added to Spider-Man 2, which vastly changes the experience by giving additional options to counter enemies. Attacks can be parried when Spider Sense glows red, or you’re just about to get hit.
3. Revamped Traversal
Traversal has not just been revamped, but there is an addition of the completely new Web Wings, which let both Peter and Miles glide through New York City.
- This tweet from Insomniac Games even shows the wings in action.
- From gameplay previews, it can be deduced that the wings can be used to cover huge distances using the speed of air, and there are certain wind tunnels made specifically to boost Web Wings.
I remember finding a prototype version of the Web Wings while playing Spider-Man PS4. Now, I’m glad that Insomniac has actually developed a full-on traversal system based on the wings that are just as engaging as the known and loved Web Swinging. Another good addition to traversal is the Super Sling Shot, which can be used to cover large distances on the map using your web.
4. New Suits
Spider-Man 2018 and Miles Morales already featured many suits, but according to this tweet from Insomniac Games, they are going to take customization to the next level.
- Spider-Man 2 will feature 65 different suits, which are divided among Peter and Miles.
- But that is not it; each suit has various styles that can be changed, and the number of styles has been confirmed to be around 200.
5. New Villains
Multiple blog posts, trailers, and gameplay reveals have teased a number of new villains in Spider-Man 2. These include Kraven The Hunter, Lizard, AKA Dr. Curt Connors, and, most importantly, Venom. Some villains from Spider-Man 2018 are also returning, like Martin Li, as shown in this story trailer from PlayStation.
6. Optimization
Insomniac Games are known for their extremely good optimization, especially for the first-party PS5 titles.
- Well, the developers have outdone themselves once again by delivering Ray Tracing in both the Quality and Performance Modes of Spider-Man 2.
- There are only two graphic modes that can be interchanged.
- Aside from that, you can even run Spider-Man 2 at 30, 40, and 60 FPS.
7. Symbiote Suit
All the gameplay reveals had one thing in common: hyping up the newly designed Symbiote Suit for Peter Parker in Spider-Man 2. It is not just a visual change, but it brings a completely different gameplay style as shown in SkillUp’s gameplay hands-on impression video, which is much more aggressive and shows the Symbiote slowly, making Peter even more powerful.
- An all-new Symbiote Surge ability activated by pressing both L3 and R3 will allow Peter to go berserk and defeat each enemy with a single takedown.
- This mode is basically akin to the Spartan Rage of Kratos from God of War Ragnarok.
8. Seamless Character Switching
As you already know, Peter and Miles will both be playable in Spider-Man 2. Additionally, you can switch between the two Spider-Men almost instantly and whenever you want outside the Story. You will even encounter Miles during crimes, helping you out when playing as Peter or vice versa.
9. Accessibility Options And Fall Damage
Spider-Man 2 comes packed with many accessibility options, but the most interesting one is definitely the fall damage option. Adding a layer of difficulty to your traversal as you swing or glide through Marvel’s New York City. Thankfully, it is just an accessibility option, and players can turn it on of off as they please.
10. Visual Cues And Exploration
Both Spider-Man 2018 and Miles Morales were heavily dependent on map markers for exploration, at least in my experience. You had to continuously open your map to see various side activities, especially if you were trying to go for 100% completion. However, in Spider-Man 2, Insomniac Games have added visual cues around New York City, which can guide you toward the location of various side activities.
- In the gameplay reveal trailer, Creative Director Bryan Intihar explained that collectibles like Spider-Bots will emit shock waves, and the camera will automatically pan toward crimes while swinging.
My Thoughts On These New Features
I’m extremely hyped to try out Spider-Man 2 as soon as it launches next week. The new changes made to traversal really make me excited, and I will definitely use the Web Wings to glide around New York. The Symbiote Suit is also something I’m looking forward to. Also, the new suits look really cool, especially the ones in the Digital Deluxe Edition. All the new refinements and features will make Spider-Man 2 an interesting sequel.
This concludes my guide on all of the new features in Spider-Man 2 that are currently known through gameplay previews and trailers. I have enlisted all the features I could find through watching the trailers and reading blog posts from PlayStation. I hope that the guide was helpful in learning about everything new that’s coming with Spider-Man 2. Let me know if you’re excited about the sequel to one of the best Superhero games ever made in the comments below!
