- Even so, Square Enix hopes for a “super programmer” to take on this colossal task and breathe life into the idea.
In the recent roundtable interview at the FanFest held last week, director Naoki Yoshida revealed that the Final Fantasy 14 developers have been fiddling with the idea of bringing the Pixel Remaster games to the MMO. Although the team has failed to achieve that due to the games running on “middleware,” the company is open to hiring a “super programmer” who thinks they can do this task.
During the interview, Naoki Yoshida was asked about the idea of being able to play the first Final Fantasy games in FFXIV and how great it could be. To the fans’ surprise, Yoshida revealed that it was, in fact, something that they had all been working with but couldn’t bring to reality due to some limitations. The following statements are a better translation of the interview conducted in Japanese.
This has also been a challenge for about a year and a half. We had been testing it because the pixel-remastered version was available, and we would be happy to play it with gold saucers and housing. However, the pixel-remastered version is running on middleware. If we wanted to run the middleware in ‘FFXIV,’ we would have to create a system to run the middleware in ‘FFXIV’ and then run the pixel-remastered version on top of it,” says Naoki Yoshida.
In short, it is a nigh impossible task, but the developers are still hopeful and would love to see this work.
If we had a couple more super programmers, not to say geniuses, I think we might be able to find a way. So, if any of you Warriors of Light are thinking, ‘I’ll run a pixel-remastered version of FFXIV,’ I’d really appreciate it if you would apply to Square Enix after reading this article (laughs),” says Naoki Yoshida.
The director was joking a little bit, but he seems to have a deep love for Final Fantasy 14 as the “theme park” for the classic series. There are numerous references to other Final Fantasy games in the MMO, one of which is a new race in the upcoming Dawntrail expansion, which references Final Fantasy 10. Pixel Remaster could become a great addition, but it may take a long time for that to happen.
Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series is a collection of remakes of the first six Final Fantasy games. These games were released between July 2021-Febraury 2022 on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, iOS, and Android. The Pixel Remaster series has found massive success and recently sold over 2 million copies.
