GTA 5 Tops PlayStation 5 Download Charts For The First Time

The figures were announced on the PlayStation blog.

Story Highlights

  • GTA 5 has topped PS5’s monthly PlayStation Store download charts for January, for the first time since the console’s release in 2020.
  • The game beat the likes of FIFA 23, Dead Space, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 to claim the top spot in both the US/Canada and EU regions.
  • The game is available at a 50% discount on the PlayStation Store. This seems to have greatly contributed to the game topping the download charts.

There aren’t many games that can claim the title of being a timeless classic. But if one game has the resume to place such a claim, it’s Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5, aka GTA 5.

Since its release in September 2013, GTA 5 has broken all sorts of records. And unlike most games of that time, the game is still going strong even on next-gen consoles like PlayStation 5, as it topped the January download chart for the console.

As revealed in figures released for PlayStation Store’s top January downloads on PlayStation Blog, GTA 5 was the top downloaded PS5 game. The game topped the PS5 charts for the US/Canada and European Union regions. This is the first time GTA 5 has topped the PS5 download charts since the console’s launch in November 2020.

The game’s main story and side missions are fun. But one significant advantage that GTA 5 has against its contemporary games is its online multiplayer mode.

The online mode, aka known as Grand Theft Auto Online, has helped GTA 5 build a sizeable and dedicated fanbase. Rockstar also specially caters to its maintenance and rolls out regular updates for it.

Also, there are tons of roleplay servers in the game, which also help GTA 5 in attracting new gamers. Although, the RP experience on consoles is limited as compared to PC. But Rockstar still comes up with brand new content to attract more gamers.

There’s also a 50% discount being offered on both GTA Online and GTA 5 Story Mode on the PlayStation Store. Meaning the game’s price has dropped from $39.99 to $19.99. So the current ongoing discount deal has also contributed to the game topping PS5 download charts.

So considering that GTA 5 is still topping the charts almost a decade after its release, it is no exaggeration to call it an immortal game. The game’s long-running success has also increased the stakes for Rockstar for the next GTA game, GTA 6. Fans expect the studio to reciprocate GTA 5’s success with GTA 6.

But it is easier said than done, as in all of gaming history only a handful of games, like CS: GO, which recently broke its all-time peak concurrent players record on steam, have achieved such a feat.
