Story Highlights
- Rockstar tells Dazed that GTA 6’s world will react realistically to player actions, moving away from the “traverse the city like a god” freedom of past games.
- Jason and Lucia mark the first playable couple in a mainline GTA game, with three ways to play: together, Lucia alone, or Jason alone.
- Development has reportedly been underway since 2013, with Rockstar’s team more than doubling in size since Red Dead Redemption 2.
As covered by Dazed Digital, Rockstar has given its most detailed look yet at what actually makes GTA 6 different from its predecessors, and it isn’t just scale.
Thirteen Years In The Making
Dazed’s Autumn 2026 print feature opens by putting GTA 6’s development timeline in context. “It’s been 13 years since Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto V, one of the most acclaimed and controversial video games of all time,” the piece states. “And it’s been roughly the same amount of time since work began on its sequel, Grand Theft Auto VI.” That places the project’s origins at around 2013, just before GTA V itself even launched.
A World Built Around Consequences

Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, described a world that pushes back against player actions rather than absorbing them silently. Walk down a street carrying a rifle, and NPCs won’t just ignore it, they’ll react and comment. Dazed writes that Rockstar’s games are “converging on real life,” with non-player characters “acting… well, less like NPCs than ever.”
The stated goal, per Nelson, is total immersion: a world that reacts more realistically than ever to what players choose to do in it. Gone, as the piece frames it, are the days of moving through the map “like a god.” It means the world will react more to small choices like walking around with fire arms in the open without any consequence.
Nelson described the philosophy behind that shift directly: “We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve based on what we didn’t do as well as we would have liked to, either because we didn’t have the time, resources or technological capabilities, or in some cases things we just didn’t do as well or consider as fully as we could have. A lot of what we do is very iterative, we adjust a lot of things by feel based on what is working and what isn’t.”
Jason And Lucia: Three Ways To Play

Jason Duval is an ex-military drug runner. Lucia Caminos is a fighter recently released from prison. For the first time in a mainline GTA game, players get a genuine playable couple, and the game offers real flexibility in how to use them:
- Play as Jason and Lucia together
- Play as just Lucia in the open world
- Play as just Jason in the open world
- Switch between them seamlessly, even mid-mission
Rockstar gave a specific example of what that switching looks like in practice: cruising down the highway as Jason, then swapping to Lucia in the passenger seat to scroll the in-game phone, complete with working social media feeds. When the job inevitably goes wrong and spirals into a car chase, players can take the wheel as one character in one moment, then swap to fire on pursuers out of the passenger window the next, all without leaving the open world or a mission’s flow.
Senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries described the relationship at the center of it all as consciously staged: “a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative,” with Jason and Lucia’s romance intended to carry far more weight than relationships in past GTA games.
Choices That Cut Deeper Than An Honor System

Rockstar is explicit that this isn’t just GTA’s old good/bad karma meter rebuilt with better writing. Choices are described as having repercussions that “cut much deeper than Rockstar’s previous titles or honour systems that reward conscientious game playing.”
At the same time, Nelson pushed back on the idea that Jason and Lucia exist purely as blank vessels for the player. “The thing we love about this medium is the way these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with,” he said. “Their story becomes a journey you share with them.” Rockstar’s stated goal is enabling as much player self-expression as possible without losing the essence of who Jason and Lucia actually are.
Exercise And Body Weight Mechanics Return
Weight and muscle systems, last seen in this form back in GTA San Andreas, are returning:
- Food affects Jason and Lucia’s weight
- Exercise visibly builds and tones muscle
- Extended time without sleep leaves a visible mark
- Multi-day benders or long stretches on the run from police physically affect how both characters look
It’s a mechanical link between play style and consequence that goes beyond stat tracking, giving sustained behavior, good or self-destructive, a visible cost over time.
Rockstar’s Most Detailed NPC Population Yet

NPC variety is a recurring theme throughout the interview. Rockstar says it developed new tools and production pipelines specifically to “build the most detailed and varied character population we’ve ever created.” That variety spans:
- Age, height, and body type
- Tattoos, piercings, and visible plastic surgery
- Clothing and lifestyle markers tied to specific areas of Leonida
Different regions of the map are said to have specifically designed populations rather than reused NPC templates, so Vice City’s streets and the wilderness around Mount Kalaga don’t just look different, they’re populated differently too. Players can also expect encounters with virtual versions of the Florida Man archetype, the real-life meme figure known for alligator wrangling and chaotic run-ins with the law.
Rockstar Met Actual Ex-criminals To Bring GTA 6 To Life

Much of the interview centers on how deliberately Rockstar approached representing Florida’s culture. Writer Michael Wiafe described wanting to avoid treating the region’s more outlandish reputation as a punchline: “It’s easy to go in with a cynical view and say, ‘Well that’s weird, put it in the game,’ but we couldn’t just stop there. We have to bring a sense of discovery to the players too, not just repeat cliches that already exist.”
That research went well beyond desk work. Humphries described the range of people Rockstar met with directly:
We will meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers and anyone notorious or influential who’ll take our calls. We hang out, get a feeling for the place, listen to the stories, cross-reference that with books and journalism, and try to get to the heart of which characters will bring the city we are creating to life.”
A Full Fictional Fashion And Brand Ecosystem

Even GTA 6’s in-game products, shops, and ad campaigns got the same treatment as its characters. Vice president of 2D/UI design Stu Petri said the goal was for every fashion label, car company, or storefront to feel like it genuinely belongs to Leonida rather than existing as a throwaway joke.
“Our vision is to build a vibrant, believable culture,” he said. “These brands reflect the aspirations, aesthetics and lifestyles of the people that inhabit our world’s spaces.” Clothing, hairstyles, and brand choices are described as reflecting wealth, taste, and identity, not just cosmetic variety.
A Team More Than Double The Size Of RDR2’s

The interview closes on the sheer scale behind all of this:
- Rockstar’s team has more than doubled in size since Red Dead Redemption 2
- A Los Angeles office is dedicated almost entirely to designing in-game pedestrians
- More than 50 real street artists were brought in to design murals, including in Vice City’s Stockyard district, based on Miami’s real Wynwood neighborhood
- The team handling vehicle handling is made up of literal race car drivers
Nelson didn’t shy away from acknowledging the pressure that scale creates, describing GTA 6 as something players could spend a decade or more of their lives playing. “It is a lot of pressure internally and externally,” he said, “but that pressure is ultimately a privilege we know we are fortunate to have. All we want to do is deliver for our audience.”
GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Rockstar’s Netflix Extended Look airing on August 27th at 3 PM ET, giving players their first official gameplay look at everything described here.
