Making Baldur’s Gate 4 Would Be A ‘Great Challenge,’ Says Owlcat

Following Baldur’s Gate 3 would be an intimidating job for practically any RPG studio. Owlcat Games, however, is not entirely opposed to taking on that considerable challenge.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Owlcat creative director Alexander Mishulin discussed the possibility of the Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader developer tackling Baldur’s Gate 4. While he recognized the pressure involved, Mishulin suggested Owlcat would be willing to take on the challenge.

Alexander Mishulin Says Owlcat Is “A Little Bit Masochistic”

Mishulin acknowledged the pressure of taking on Baldur’s Gate 4, which is hardly surprising. Larian Studios set an exceptionally high standard with Baldur’s Gate 3, leaving any future developer responsible for the sequel with enormous expectations to manage.

When asked if Hasbro approached Owlcat to make Baldur’s Gate 4, would he accept the project? Mishulin said:  

It’s a really great honor. You already said that we are a little bit masochistic. So yeah, we will consider it a great challenge!”

Mishulin acknowledged the fact that any studio trying to replicate Larian’s formula will be “doomed to fail”. So any studio taking on the project will have to do its own thing rather than replicating what came before.

“In my opinion, Larian has made their own vision of how a sequel to Baldurs’s Gate should be, and they presented it to us. Any other studio that will be doing BG4 will be doing their own game in the Baldurs’ Gate setting,” – Mishulin 

Owlcat certainly has relevant experience. Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Rogue Trader all demonstrate the studio’s familiarity with dense rulesets, branching narratives, companions, and player-driven choices. So a Baldur’s Gate game by Owlcat will certainly be an interesting game even though it might be different from Larian’s version.

The developer has also discussed having ideas for Rogue Trader beyond its two announced DLCs, suggesting it remains invested in ambitious, long-term RPG development.

Owlcat Still Has The Expanse: Osiris Reborn Ahead

For now, Owlcat’s major project is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. The upcoming action RPG has inevitably drawn comparisons to Mass Effect because of its cinematic presentation, sci-fi setting, companion-driven structure, and third-person combat.

Still, Owlcat does not consider the game a direct successor to BioWare’s series. The team told GamesRadar that it enjoyed Mass Effect and drew significant inspiration from it, but Osiris Reborn is intended to establish its own identity within The Expanse universe.

Baldur’s Gate 4 remains an open question, and Owlcat’s comments should not be mistaken for an announcement. Even so, Mishulin’s response makes one thing clear: if the opportunity ever arrived, Owlcat would at least be willing to face the pressure.
