NetherRealm has a good track record of producing the most memorable fighting titles. Its last project was released back in 2019 when it took the fighting game genre by storm. Since then, the fans have awaited a new game by the talented bunch. However, there is good news for gamers looking forward to the studio’s next title.
It appears that we will soon be getting an official announcement for NetherRealm’s next project in the brewer. The rumor sprouts from Ed Boon’s own answer to a fan query in a new Q&A session held on the Twitter Handle.
The creator of arguably the best fighting game IPs in the industry has given us all a new window for its impending announcement. Moreover, many other questions were cleared by the creator, such as the expected post-release support window, a possible release date, and more.
Major Rundown
- The creator of Mortal Kombat and Injustice IPs, Ed Boon, recently helmed a new Q&A session on the Twitter handle to answer a plethora of fan queries.
- When questioned about the reveal of its next impending project on whether it will be revealed within six months, the creator answered affirmatively.
- Ed Boon also shared an alleged release date while answering a fan, writing “23” in mid-sentence while noting that he should not answer that question.
- Mortal Kombat 12 will seemingly receive post-release support for a longer period than its predecessor, despite MK11 receiving the longest support period in the franchise yet.
In the latest Q&A session, Ed Boon had a myriad of questions thrown at him, and he answered most of the prominent ones. When asked about whether the next project will be announced within six months, the creator responded with a “likely” remark. The creator gave the same answer to two similar questions asked by fans.
Likely

The answer suggests that the reveal window is being considered but not wholly finalized yet. NetherRealm’s upcoming game may be announced during the early months of next year, like the E3 event, and it may release near the end of 2023.
The studio is known for pumping out games soon after their announcement, so it would not be a new phenomenon. Ed Boon also shed light on more fan inquiries; for instance, Ed Boon may have revealed the release date in mid-sentence while answering a question related to it dissidently.
I really shouldn't 23-answer that.

It is entirely feasible that it is only a placeholder date, which could be subject to change in the future. Ed Boon even may have come with it on the spot. All in all, it is always good to have a date to look forward to.
Furthermore, Ed Boon also revealed a notable point for Mortal Kombat 12, which serves as a glad tiding to fans expecting its eventual announcement soon. Mortal Kombat 12 will have the longest post-release support period in the franchise. In other words, we will see more updates and possible DLCs for years for the title after its launch.
MK11 support was the longest we supported a game. Next game should be even longer.

The support for Mortal Kombat 11 resulted in some prominent characters arriving after it was released. We could expect more events for the upcoming entry.
Unfortunately, NetherRealm’s current project remains a lingering fable in the fighting game community. Ed Boon, the creator of Mortal Kombat and Injustice, has yet not shed light on the matter in this Q&A.
NetherRealm’s last Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat 11, was released many a year ago with fast-paced and fluid gameplay riddled with satisfying sequences of unique character combos. The immersive campaign and the equally beloved multiplayer have remained popular all these years as fans await the next addition to the series.
On the other side, the Injustice IP is also fully worthy of a new entry as players are curious about what direction the enticing title will adopt. In the past, Ed has noted that NetherRealm’s next project is either Mortal Kombat or Injustice 3. In other words, a new entry in the Marvel vs. DC fighting game appears to be out of the equation.
It is impossible to satiate all the fans and release the anticipated titles simultaneously; Regardless, one of the two possible games could be revealed in a few months.
The new tease by Ed Boon about NetherRealm’s next game should be calming enough to the fans as we eagerly wait for a new announcement. While it is unlikely, we suggest taking the words of Ed Boon with a grain of salt. NetherRealm may change its plans due to a possible internal delay in the project’s development.
