Petition To Cancel Assassin’s Creed Shadows Now Boasts Over 30,000 Signatures

Many Assassin's Creed fans are upset.

Story Highlights

  • The petition to cancel Assassin’s Creed Shadows has now gained over 30,000 signatures.
  • It has been propelled by fans upset with Ubisoft for promoting Yasuke as a real samurai.
  • Ubisoft has not yet responded to the petition in any way so far, making fans more bitter.

A Japanese Change.org petition has gained over 30,000 signatures, which aims to shut down Assassin’s Creed Shadows in its entirety. The petition speaks out against the alleged blatant historical inaccuracies in the game that are considered a “serious insult” to Japanese culture and history. Some extreme claims even go as far as to say that it could lead to Asian racism.

Ubisoft continues to misunderstand the nature and role of the Samurai. This is a serious insult to Japanese culture and history and could lead to Asian racism. We demand that Ubisoft immediately stop the release of “Assassin’s Creed Shadows” and show serious investigation and respect for Japanese history and culture,” reads the petition.

The biggest inaccuracy in Assassin’s Creed Shadows appears to be Yasuke being presented as a real black samurai. Some historical records accept him as such, yet others argue against it. The frustration of AC fans can be seen in the massive number of dislikes on the game’s official YouTube trailer and combat gameplay reveal videos.

Ubisoft Has Yet To Speak About The Alleged Historical Inaccuracies

While the petition is gaining more and more attention, Ubisoft has still not addressed the controversy in any way. Fans reckon that all of this could have been prevented if devs had said that Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a work of fiction and did not represent history. Instead, the studio has allegedly conveyed various inaccuracies, which has upset many Japanese and international AC fans who disagree with the disputed history.
