Players Are Not Happy Over How Van Damme Looks In Mortal Kombat 1

Fans have noticed the skin does not resemble the legendary actor it is based on.

Story Highlights

  • Mortal Kombat fans are disappointed at the Jean-Claude Van Damme skin reveal.
  • Many feel that the homage fails to capture the original actor’s likeness.
  • One Reddit user even created their own version of the skin which looks much closer to Van Damme.
  • Mortal Kombat will feature 24 characters on release, with additional ones releasing with its DLC.

NetherRealm recently revealed a sneak peek at a new skin coming for Johnny Cage. It honors the veteran actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, who served as the original inspiration for the character. However, while some fans have appreciated the nod, many others have been left disappointed. A common issue raised is the fact that the skin simply does not resemble Van Damme.

In fact, to prove the point, some fans even took it upon themselves to fix the character’s appearance by creating their own mock-up. Interestingly, this fan-made attempt ended up looking much closer to the actor than the official version. At the moment, the post is trending on the Mortal Kombat subreddit, so it is getting traction from a sizable portion of the community.

A Reddit user added their two cents to the discourse. According to them, having seen the two versions side by side, the official looks even less like Jean-Claude. Another Reddit user added that it did not make sense to them how fans could create a better result within a couple of hours, than NetherRealm themselves. Even despite the latter being a massive company.

That said, while the skin might not have been exactly as fans hoped, it is still great to have it in the game after years of anticipation. Johnny Cage looking like Jean-Claude Van Damme was something players had been wanting for many years. And while it does look a bit off now, it is possible that the studio might add some finishing touches to it later on. So all hope is not lost just yet.

Additionally, Mortal Kombat 1 adds a bunch of new features for players to look forward to. Including a couple of other exciting celebrity appearances. The DLC is set to include John Cena as his iconic character, Peacemaker. Plus, the game will include the voice of J.K. Simmons, who will be reprising Omni-Man. It was also recently announced that Megan Fox will portray the vampire character Nitara

Besides these characters, a recent leak also stated the game would have 23 different playable characters and a single empty slot. The empty slot likely indicates that the character will become available later as players progress through the game’s storyline. The leak featured footage from the Switch version of the game. It surfaced on Reddit but was removed due to a copyright notice. This might mean that it was indeed legitimate.

Mortal Kombat 1 is set to come out on September 19, 2023. The game will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
