The Final Fantasy franchise features one of the most iconic JRPGs the world has ever played, and in 2024, another major iteration in the series is coming, already making waves across the industry for the amount of hype it’s generated. To get players and fans up to speed with a quick refresher before Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s imminent release, PlayStation has released a new video, recapping its predecessor’s story events.
The 3-minute footage starts off with an introduction to the Shinra Power Electric Company and how it’s ripping the planet off its natural resources for its own monetary gain. Attempting to retaliate against Shinra’s heinous work, a rebel group going by the name of Avalanche sets out to destroy one of Shinra’s reactors that extract the planet’s very essence. From there on out, it’s a whole rollercoaster of action, emotion, and drama.
Though what matters is, Final Fantasy 7 Remake ended on a good note, paving the way for the squad of the good guys to enter a new world of freedom altogether, but that doesn’t mean their days of danger are over yet. The upcoming installment Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth takes over from Remake’s ending, placing the protagonist Cloud Strife on a new journey with revised gameplay mechanics and visuals.

So for those perplexed, here’s a little section to get you up to pace with what Square Enix has envisioned so far. It all goes back to the OG Final Fantasy 7 that came out in 1997, so the 2020-released Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a reimagining of that game, but not completely. Game Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that remaking the classic Final Fantasy 7 is a trilogy project, and each game in this series will be standalone.
We have announced that the Final Fantasy VII remake project will be a trilogy and that each entry will be a standalone game in its own right. Because of this, each game’s balancing is done independently and a player’s levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next.”
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has a release date of February 29, 2024, launching only for the PlayStation 5 as an exclusive title. Square released another trailer for the game about two weeks ago, and it’s hype as well. Give it a watch.
