Story Highlights
- GTA 5 has surpassed 230 million units sold worldwide.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 has now reached 87 million sales.
- The broader GTA and Red Dead franchises are approaching 475 million and 116 million sales, respectively.
Rockstar Games’ two biggest releases continue to sell at a staggering pace years after their respective debuts.
Grand Theft Auto 5 Has Surpassed 230 Million Sales

According to Take-Two Interactive’s latest investor presentation, Grand Theft Auto 5 has crossed 230 million units sold worldwide. The open-world blockbuster initially launched in 2013, meaning it has continued attracting buyers across three console generations for well over a decade.
The new milestone further cements GTA 5 as one of the best-selling games ever released. It also brings lifetime sales for the entire Grand Theft Auto series close to 475 million units.
Its longevity is difficult to separate from GTA Online, which has received a steady stream of vehicles, missions, businesses, and other updates since its debut. Rockstar has also repeatedly re-released GTA 5, including upgraded editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Hits 87 Million Sales

Red Dead Redemption 2 is not far behind when its considerably younger age is taken into account. Rockstar’s Western epic has now sold 87 million copies since launching for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in October 2018, according to Insider Gaming.
Combined sales for the wider Red Dead franchise are also nearing 116 million units. That makes Red Dead Redemption 2 responsible for the overwhelming majority of the series’ commercial performance, despite Rockstar never releasing a native PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S upgrade.
That missing current-generation version remains one of the stranger parts of the game’s history. Red Dead Redemption 2 is still widely praised for its open world, storytelling, animation, and attention to detail, but console players remain limited to last-generation versions.
Given the success of these games, we can expect similar numbers from GTA 6. Recently, Take-Two CEO announced that GTA 6 pre-orders have been ‘exceptional’. Rockstar has announced an extended look at GTA 6 for August 27th, and the game is set to release worldwide on November 19th.
