Stellar Blade has been in everyone’s view lately. Whether it is because players are obsessed with the main character “Eve” or its flashy NieR Automata-style combat, the spotlight shines bright on it. Speaking to Famitsu, director Kim Hyun-Tae spoke at length about the inspirations behind this project, as well as what caused them to develop the game exclusively for PlayStation.

Stellar Blade will feature fast parry and dodge-focused hack-and-slash combat.

According to Kim, the goal was to always create a complete game for a single platform and it was ultimately decided that PlayStation 5 was going to be the choice for Stellar Blade. The team aims to utilize the fast loading times of the PS5s SSD, and the adaptive triggers of the DualSense.

I wanted to release a highly complete work on one platform. When deciding which platform to use, we came to the conclusion that PS5 would provide the most optimal gaming experience. The aim is to enhance the sense of immersion by making full use of the loading speed of the SSD and the adaptive trigger function of DualSense.”

Kim further talks about his personal experience with PlayStation, saying that it is his childhood dream to create a game on PlayStation hence why Stellar Blade is being made as a PS5 exclusive. Talking about his experience as a Sony fan, he says that while he used to enjoy video games, he didn’t have a lot of money to buy them. He began playing games earnestly after the launch of the original PlayStation.

Personally, as a fan of Sony games, making games on PlayStation has a special meaning to me. This has been my dream since I was a child,” Kim added.

Kim also mentions his inspirations behind the game. Directly citing titles such as NieR Automata, Sekiro, Bayonetta, and God of War as influences on the project. In particular, he talks about how NieR Automata was what made him realize that he wanted to make a game like Stellar Blade. He also mentions that he is a God of War fan, and enjoys its emphasis on scale when portraying its massive world.

The NieR Automata inspiration has been obvious from as early as the title’s initial reveal trailer. A game about a badass anime woman slicing up things with a sword. Last week’s extended 6-minute trailer during Sony’s State of Play conference also gave us a much deeper look into Stellar Blade, confirming that it will feature side quests in a semi-open world setting.

Stellar Blade is set to launch on April 26, 2024, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.
