The Tekken Franchise Has Surpassed 50 Million Sales Worldwide

Tekken 8 is going to add considerably to the sales, that's for sure.

Story Highlights

  • The Tekken franchise has now sold over 50 million copies worldwide, as affirmed by Bandai Namco Europe CEO Arnaud Muller in an interview.
  • The last entry alone sold more than 10 million copies; it is the best-selling entry in the series.
  • Tekken 8 will come out on January 26, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC.

The Tekken franchise has blossomed into one of the best fighting series in the world ever since its inception decades ago. It has achieved many staggering milestones along the way and now has surpassed over 50 million sales globally. The huge occasion was reported by Bandai Namco Europe CEO Arnaud Muller in an interview with GamesIndustry

And then [we have] a very small title called Tekken 8 which you may have heard of. [Tekken] has sold more than 50 million copies as an IP, and Tekken 7 sold ten million copies. So, it’s going to be great, it’s going to be big. [It] really takes the fighting genre to a new level…,” says CEO Arnaud Muller.

Tekken 7 alone made a huge dent in the overall sales, shifting over 10 million units during the midst of last year, as iterated by the CEO once more. It currently stands as the top-selling game in the entire franchise. But even more is expected from the upcoming entry. The CEO continues and expresses his lingering anticipations with the next title in the series.

This is as good as it gets in terms of making the best of Unreal Engine, and being able to polish the game to a level where visually, it looks stunning. We have big expectations [for] Tekken 8.”

Tekken 8 is taking the utmost advantage of Unreal Engine and simultaneously focusing on the game story. To put things into perspective, the title is going to feature a story mode that is much larger than the last entry in the franchise. The next title is returning with the famous ball mode that was prevalent in the early days of the series. It was present in Tekken 3 and the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Wii U edition.

Bandai Namco is currently also busy preparing other entries in its portfolio. Nevertheless, its roster of Western titles is currently not as huge as we have seen in the past. The publisher is currently focused on FromSoftware’s Armored Core 6, as Arnaud Muller notes. We can expect to see many prominent updates in the game. It has exceeded the devs’ expectations because of the new fans that joined the foray after Elden Ring’s popularity.

Tekken 8 will launch on January 26, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, and PC. As per a leak, it will feature about 38 playable characters upon launch.
