The Outer Worlds Has Now Sold Over 5 Million Copies

Obsidian has announced that The Outer Worlds has now surpassed over 5 million copies sold on the day of RPG’s fourth anniversary since its initial launch in 2019. Obsidian’s space-adventure title marked a critical success at its release and had already sold 2 million copies in four months of release. The latest milestone follows the game’s previous achievement of selling 4 million copies in August 2021. 

Through the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of The Outer Worlds, the developer uncovered new posters for the RPG, celebrating the game’s fourth anniversary with an incredible accomplishment of 5 million sales.

Something worth noting here is that The Outer Worlds’ achievement of 5 million units in global sales was included in the publisher Take-Two Interactive’s financial call as of May 2023. We assume the developers intentionally held off the announcement until the RPG’s official fourth anniversary. Although, in any case, the title managed to sell a million more units in two years since the last milestone of 4 million in 2021.

The Outer Worlds took the crown for GOTY at the 2020 New York Game Awards, RPG of the Year at The D.I.C.E Awards, and Best Game Writing at the Nebula Awards. The developer’s standout success with the game led them to release it on Nintendo Switch in June 2020, followed by the final release on new gen platforms PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The game was released on October 25, 2019, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, not taking long to become one of the most acclaimed RPGs out there. Obsidian has announced a sequel to The Outer Worlds and even released a trailer earlier, but has since been quiet about its development. Currently, the studio is busy with their first-person RPG, Avowed.
