In an interview with Deadline, Sony Pictures TV Studios President Katherine Pope got to talk about the studio’s progress with the TV show adaption of one of the biggest games of 2022. Pope shared that the team is very careful with working on IPs, necessary for the TV show to remain connected to its roots.
The TV show God of War is a collaboration between PlayStation Productions, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon Studios. The Norse mythology-based series will follow Kratos, The God of War, as he experiences roughly the same events as the 2018 reboot. He has given up his violent past in doing so he banished himself to the Norse realm Midgard Realm.
As previously announced by Santa Monica studios, God Of War Ragnarok is the last entry to the series, since then the hype surrounding the TV show adaption has been even stronger. Amazon and Sony Pictures are aware of all the expectations of the project they’ve gotten their hands on and they keep reassuring fans of their efforts.
Recently in an interview with Deadline, the president of Sony Pictures TV Studios, Katherine Pope said the God Of War TV show is in its early stages and that they’re trying their best to keep the values of the game while expanding on it as well. Pope said she’s “impressed” by what the team is doing.
She further said they’re working in such a way that if you are unfamiliar with the game, the show in itself will be a fantastic series to watch.
There’s a lot of really important IP here, we’re working on God of War, the PlayStation title, which is still in the early stages. I know the game pretty well, and I’m so impressed with what they’re already doing in terms of building out that world and expanding, keeping all the values of the game but also expanding it so that if you don’t know the game, it’s still going to be a really satisfying show on its own.”
If the show is still in its early stages, it’s safe to say we won’t see a release this year. Pope further said that people think it’s easy to work on an IP but it’s actually harder than beginning an original idea because IP needs you to be familiar with the core, “the most incredibly foundational pieces of the source material.”. And, determining what from the plot will be entertaining in the TV show as well.
Recently in another interview, Amazon Studios’ head of television Vernon Sanders assured fans that the show will never deviate far from the source material. Sanders said they’re aware of God Of War’s passionate fanbase. God Of War is special to them as a TV show because of its emotional core.
At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape, so what Rafe (showrunner) and Mark, and Hawk (writers) have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own,” said Vernon Sanders.
Vernon said the same thing as Katherine, if you haven’t even played the game, you’ll still fall in love with the series, and he’s confident that it’s going to be huge.
Moreover, we saw the TV show adaption of The Last Of Us recently. The show is being hugely praised and is already confirmed to return with a season 2. The show even became HBO’s second-biggest premiere in more than a week.
As per the massive success, God Of War Ragnarok gathered last year, recently hitting the 11 million sold copies milestone, we expect to see just as much crazy reaction on the release of the TV show.
