New findings from the recent Sony business segment meeting have revealed that PlayStation 4 still makes up half of the console’s MAUs. Both the PS4 and 5 users share 49 million monthly active consoles each, indicating that a good chunk still resides on the last-gen device. Hideaki Nishino, the soon-to-start CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group, also claimed that the PS4 console is “still an important part” of its business during a web call.
Hideaki also mentions that while PlayStation 4 is holding up, the current-gen consoles are more engaged and are making more money for Sony. Users are spending more time playing games on PS5 compared to the last-gen, and likewise, more are spending on add-on content, services, and peripherals. Surprisingly, 12% less is being spent on full games on PS5, as highlighted by the new report.
PlayStation 5 Becomes Sony’s Most Profitable Generation
Hideaki Nishino also confirms that the PlayStation 5 has become Sony’s most profitable generation. The report highlights the statistics, showing that the operating income of PS5 is already at $10B compared to $9B of last-gen. However, figures generated by PS5 sales currently stand at $106B compared to PlayStation 4’s $107B.

The rest of the report also sheds light on Sony’s gaming IPs. Hideaki Nishino said that PlayStation will continue to grow its existing franchises, increase its live-service capabilities, and bring games on more devices. Its “tentpole” single-player games will arrive on consoles first, but live-service games will launch on both consoles and PCs.
