Scalpers Lose Money As The PS5 Pro Remains In Stock In Most Places

Nobody likes scalpers.

Story Highlights

  • The PlayStation 5 Pro is Sony’s answer to the mid-gen refresh of modern-day video game consoles.
  • Expectedly, the unit was supposed to remain out of stock at most places, but the opposite has ended up unfolding.
  • Instead of the PS5 Pro, the disc drive for the console is now getting sold at exorbitant prices on platforms like eBay.

Quite on the contrary to the base PlayStation 5’s launch in November 2020, scalpers did not see their losses coming. Sony just pushed out the PlayStation family’s latest member in recent times, slapping on a fairly noticeable $699 price tag on the unit, and shipping it without an in-built disc drive. For reasons more than one, therefore, the PS5 Pro currently remains in stock in most marketplaces and retail stores across the globe.

While good news for many, this is horrible news for scalpers who gather stock ahead of time and re-sell it at a higher price when it becomes scarce elsewhere. These guys are having no luck so far it seems, and if you head over to eBay and search for listings of the hardware, you’ll notice many of them selling below market rate.

It’s worth noting, however, that the separately sold detachable disk drive is currently sold out across retail stores, so that’s the current focus of scalpers. While regularly priced at $79.99, you’ll find listings going as up as $250 for the accessory, and that’s just outrageous.

Well, what’s outrageous in the first place is that the PS5 Pro comes without an in-built disc drive, and yet still demands $700 upfront. It is packing quite the hardware on paper, but the console’s elevated cost coupled with a lack of dedicated PS5 Pro games could be the reason it’s not getting sold out across retailers.

A Swath Of Enhanced Games Have Welcomed The PS5 Pro

While some hits are still left to get that shiny “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label, such as Cyberpunk 2077, you’ll find the new consoles’s catalog increasing every day when it really comes down to it. Talk about Baldur’s Gate 3 devs adding 60 FPS in split-screen mode thanks to the hardware capacity of the console, followed by Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, and others joining in on the fun.

Do let me know if you’ve got your Pro console yet in the comments section ahead.
