After the successful release of the Return to Monkey Island, Craig Derrick, Executive Producer at LucasFilms, teased a return to a past Lucasarts title. While not giving away what that return would be, it was strongly hinted that this would be a return to the Maniac Mansion series.
Derrick posted on his Twitter celebrating the launch and success of the Return to Monkey Island and talked about their prior goals and plans that led to the release of Monkey Island. At the end of his post, however, he drops a very hard-to-miss tease for something related to Maniac Mansion.
I’m sure more will be said throughout the weeks and months ahead, but for now, I’ll be standing by when it’s time to go BACK TO THE MANSION!
This also hasn’t been the first time something related to Maniac Mansion has been teased. Back in August, Derrick once again retweeted a post promoting a fan-enhanced version of the game with the caption “I know that I must… GO BACK TO THE MANSION!”
Maniac Mansion was a 1987 adventure game released for the NES and the Commodore 64. The game received a sequel in 1993 called Day of the Tentacle which was one of Lucasarts most highly regarded adventure games among their other games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango.
Since their release, almost every classic Adventure game in the Lucasarts hall of fame has received an updated version of the game with a new HD art style, improved controls, and numerous quality of life improvements.
This includes almost the entire Monkey Island series as well as other games like Day of The Tentacle and Grim Fandango (which arguably received the least substantial changes of all the remasters).
Surprisingly, one of the few classic Lucasarts adventures that haven’t received the modern facelift just so happens to be Maniac Mansion. So, this could either be a potential remaster or remake of the Maniac Mansion or could be a whole new entry into the series. We’ll just have to wait and see for the time being.
Both the original Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacles are widely regarded as among some of the best of the bunch when it came to point-and-click adventure games.
They were and are still beloved to this day by many players for their cartoony art style, witty and charming dialogue as well as their interesting stories and brain-busting puzzles.
While we can’t speculate when we will see a possible announcement, this news is sure to be music to the ears of fans who have been waiting for a Maniac Mansion remaster for decades! Fans can also bide their time with our guide on games that are relatively similar to Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle.
