Sony is a powerhouse of solid IPs. These include the massively successful series God of War, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Horizon, and so much more. God of War had a tumultuous after God of War 3, as the series wavered from title to title, before being dormant for a long time.
Then came God of War (2018) which left its audience in awe. Not only was it a spectacular combat game, but also had a deeply human and captivating story about a father and son traveling together, discovering themselves, and facing their fears and their pasts head-on together. It was later ported to PC by Jetpack Interactive.
The port was very well-received by the PC gaming community for being very stable, providing extra features as well such as UltraWide support, DLSS, Ray Tracing, and FSR support, among others.
Jetpack reportedly worked for 2 years on the PC port and it shows, and Sony was supposedly so impressed by their work that they provided them with the resources to staff up and contracted them to make a new live services title for them.
Major Takeaway:
- Jetpack Interactive is working with Sony to make a new live services game of a “Prized IP” for them.
- This is indicated through Jetpack’s LinkedIn post, and job listings on their website.
This is not the first time that Jetpack Interactive has worked with Sony. They previously ported Orcs Must Die! Unchained to PlayStation 4 and also made the very well-received PC port of God of War, which was reportedly in development for at least two years.
The amount of effort Jetpack put in for God of War’s PC port can not be ignored. Not only was it very well-optimized but also had many extra nifty features such as UltraWide support, DLSS, Ray Tracing, and FSR support, among others.
Now, according to Jetpack Interactive’s LinkedIn page, they are working on a new AAA IP for Sony.
This is not altogether surprising as Jetpack did a very good job with GoW’s port. Michael Kiernan, who is a Senior Programmer at Jetpack had the following to say on the post:
Hey for anyone who’d like a small studio experience while still working on AAA games we’ve been helping Sony out with their God of War games and they like us so much we’re staffing up for another completely different project.”
Apparently, Sony was so impressed with the work that they contracted Jetpack to work on another game for them, for which they are currently staffing up.
This also coincides with job listings that have popped up on Jetpack’s website. Of particular interest are two listings for the positions of Network Engineer and Rendering Engineer.
In the “About Jetpack Interactive” section of both listings, it is stated:
We are now working directly with Sony to develop one of its flagship IPs within its much anticipated live services games portfolio. If you’re revved up about being part of a small and skilled SWAT team making some of the finest AAA games out there – we’re pretty sure you’ll like working at Jetpack.
Come work alongside our team of experienced game developers and take pride in being part of a select team working on a prized IP.”
This clears up any doubt that it is a live services game, however, we do not know whether its a new IP or they are working on one of Sony’s current or previous IPs, though the case seems to be more of the latter as it states clearly “to develop on of its flagship IPs”, and also states it as a “prized IP.”
Sony has many IPs that could receive a love services treatment so the possibilities are endless. Moving on, the job listing for Network Engineer has several interesting points.
The qualifications section of the listing states “Experience working on network-oriented gameplay engineering for PC and/or console” which indicates that although this game is by Sony for its consoles, it may not be an exclusive and arrive on PC as well.
Recently we have seen that Sony has been focusing on amping up its catalog for PC, so this is entirely possible. Another thing of note is in the Preferred Skills section, experience with Unreal Engine 4 or Unreal Engine 5 is stated, meaning that it is in development on one of these iterations of the popular Unreal Engine.
The Responsibilities section of the job listing for Rendering Engineer further strengthens the fact that this new game for Sony will be developed in Unreal Engine, and the Qualifications section further strengthens the speculation that it may arrive on PC as well as Sony’s consoles.
For the time being, there are no further details, so all we can currently do is speculate, but we hope that Jetpack further strengthens Sony’s portfolio and offering of games by their game.
