Role-playing games constitute probably the most influential genre in gaming. Since the old days of Japanese RPGs, the genre has developed a generation of creators and video game designers, while being highly successful.
One very old RPG series that is considered a classic in the genre and has a dazzling legacy is Suikoden.
Based on a classical Chinese novel, the series has been around since 1995 and is about to make a comeback. Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is arriving this year and becoming the first new release in the series since 2012. Now, the release date for this upcoming RPG has potentially leaked, indicating a March 9 release date.
Major Takeaways
- Suikoden I&II HD Remaster will potentially release on March 9, 2023, according to a French retail chain.
- The SteamDB listing, which can be wrong, showcases a December 31 release date.
- Before this change, the game also had a March release on Steam, matching the PS4 launch window.
- New gameplay for the game has also come out, showcasing rune attacks and enhanced backgrounds.
A user on ResetEra bought this potential leak to our attention. Fnac, a France retail chain listed Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars for sale. However, there had a very interesting piece of information attached to it.
Suikoden I&II HD Remaster will release on March 9, 2023, according to the France retail chain. You can see in the screenshot below, the “Date De Parution“, or simply the release date is for March. This is a new revelation as no official news about this has come out.
Konami has set a release date of 2023 for Suikoden I&II HD Remaster but without a specific window. But now, it seems like the company will release the remaster of the classic games in 3 months. You should keep in mind that this isn’t our first leak about this release date.
On SteamDB, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster previously had a release date of March 2, 2023. This is close to the launch date the Fnac website has for the game. However, in November 2022, someone changed this info about the RPG remaster on SteamDB.
According to the latest SteamDB entry, Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is going to come out on December 31, 2023. Be mindful however that this date could be wrong as the SteamDB listing itself says. It isn’t entirely impossible that both of these listings can be right.
The Fnac website release date is only for the PlayStation 4 version of the game. It displays only the physical copy of Suikoden I&II HD Remaster for PS4. But, the SteamDB listing is obviously for the PC release of the game.
Most probably, the RPG will release on the same day and one of these dates is wrong. However, anything can happen in the gaming world. We can only hope that this release date is sooner rather than later as we can’t wait to play Suikoden I&II HD Remaster.
Gameplay
In addition to this release date news, new gameplay has also dropped. The official Twitter account of Suikoden has been showing off some impressive glimpses of the remake. From what we can tell from these clips, the Suikoden I&II HD Remaster looks great.
We get our first glimpse at the “Soul Eater” rune in action from a gameplay video. A Twitter poll revealed that this rune was a fan favorite. Following the voting, a clip shows us how it will look in Suikoden I&II HD Remaster, and the result looks good.

Konami told fans that the remake of the RPG will feature enhanced backgrounds and redrawn portraits. That upgrade is clear in the videos as the game looks much better than its 1990s counterparts. You can see the visual difference between the Crest of Black Blade and the Crest of Shining Shield gameplay clip.
Suikoden I&II HD Remaster has backgrounds that are much more detailed. The dynamic attacks showcase this in the best way possible and have us even more excited for the game. A video also shows the difference between the two games, and it is light and day.

No one knows when the Suikoden I&II HD Remaster will release, but if this leak is true it’s pretty close. From the gameplay, the end product looks well done so it might not be that far away. Hopefully, we do see the game released on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows on March 9, 2023.
