According to a detailed report by Kotaku, it seems that the highly rumored Grand Theft Auto Remastered Trilogy is actually real and is near completion with the intent to push it out by late October or early November. This date coincides well with the release of the next-gen release of Grand Theft Auto 5 and the collection was supposedly going to launch as a free “thank you” gift for purchasing the next-gen version of GTA V. However, it seems that due to complications amid the Covid-19 crisis plans for this release have drastically shifted numerous times. Initially intended alongside GTA 5, the release was then shifted to earlier this year, and then further shifted to later this year to late October and early November.
The collection is confirmed to be launching for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, PC, Mobile Phones as well as the Google Stadia. It is suggested that due to the workload amid the Covid 19 crisis, the release date for the PC and mobile phone versions might very well be pushed to next year, although that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Sources from Kotaku suggest that these remasters are being developed using the Unreal Engine and that a source who has seen the product in action claim it looks like a heavily modded classic GTA title, with an updated UI that retains the style and remains consistent with the aesthetic of their respective game. The visuals are supposedly a mix of “new and old graphics“.
No gameplay changes have been confirmed but it seems that these remasters are staying true to the original PS2 era games in any way possible. One can likely expect some Quality of Life changes in these remasters that these games have always needed in modern times, like a proper checkpoint system to say the least.
Kotaku’s sources also claim that these titles are being developed by Rockstar Dundee, a newly acquired studio that has previously worked on titles like the Halo Master Chief Collection, Crackdown 2, and Crackdown 3. And supposedly this studio is not just involved in heavily spearheading the development of these remasters but is also assisting in developing the next-gen port of GTA V as well.
Kotaku also claims that a source has said that a port of Red Dead Redemption is also in the works, something I’d be particularly excited to see as someone who’s never had the opportunity to play the game himself aside from watching it online to prepare for the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 but as of now there hasn’t been much to say on that matter aside from mere speculation that has been going on for as long as we can all remember.
