Baldur’s Gate 3 In Japan To Feature Censorship For Adult Content

Larian Studios’ much acclaimed RPG, Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to undergo heavy censorship for its Japan release. This includes the removal of any in-game nudity and adult content The measure will further expand to cut down specific torture scenes from the regional edition of the title. Larian is filtering the game in compliance with CERO’s Code of Ethics standards to secure its launch in Japan.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s Japanese publisher, Spike Chunsoft has announced the modifications made to the title to release it in the region. Basically, the Japanese players will be unable to toggle on the option for explicit content from the game’s menu. This includes “display of genitals,” “display of nudity in cutscenes,” and “view s*x scenes.” The option to enable adult material will be fixed to “off” in the Japanese edition.

Spike Chunsoft went on to add that the Japanese release will remove the option to torture NPCs in Act 1’s Goblin Camp. The whole modification is to make the title comply with Appendix 3 of CERO’s Code of Ethics, which states that open depiction of genitalia and intimate intercourse is strictly forbidden. The standards were required to be met in order to release Baldur’s Gate 3 in Japan.

That said, Japanese players will be able to play the title in their native language, so that’s a plus. Baldur’s Gate 3 will also be released physically in Japan, which is something that hasn’t occurred elsewhere yet.

In other news, Baldur’s Gate 3 marked an impressive launch, becoming the best PlayStation 5 game of all time on Metacritic. Not just on PlayStation, the RPG has become the most-played game on Valve’s platform, Steam Deck, pushing Bethesda’s Starfield to the second spot. The title has also kept averaging a 200,000-player count on Steam, even months after release, so there’s that. 

Baldur’s Gate 3 was released on 3 August 2023 on Windows.
