- Sonic Frontiers has sold 3.5 million units since its launch, making it the best-selling 3D game in the franchise to date.
- SEGA’s response to 2017’s Sonic Forces came in the form of Frontiers which laid a new foundation for the future of the series.
Sonic Frontiers has officially sold 3.5 million units, earning it the best-selling 3D Sonic game title since Heroes. The news comes from an official SEGA/Rovio conference that occurred earlier this month in Helsinki, Finland following SEGA’s announcement to acquire Rovio. In addition, it was reported in April that Frontiers had reached the 3.2 million units mark and has since managed to sell an extra 300,000 units.
Heroes was previously the best-selling 3D Sonic title, having sold a total of 3.41 million copies by 2007. It was released on the sixth generation of consoles along with PC and received mixed reviews from critics despite its obvious commercial success. Praise was directed toward the fast gameplay and similarities to the 2D roots of the series along with visual design, detailed environments, and textures.
(I know I said I wouldn't talk about Sonic, but I haven't seen anyone talk about this.)

However, criticism was directed at its clipping, certain visual faults, camera issues, etc. Sonic Frontiers was SEGA’s response to the reception garnered by 2017’s Sonic Forces. In order to redefine the direction of the series for the next decade, the team returned to the drawing board to come up with something that way lay another foundation for the Sonic franchise similar to the original and Adventures in 1998.
It’s safe to say that SEGA’s efforts paid off given the response from players and critics alike. While Sonic Frontiers had its own issues, it was a refreshing take on the Sonic franchise with tons of potential for its future. The open-world approach elevated certain elements, such as the boss fights despite the overall design leaving a fair bit to be desired.
Sonic is one of the most iconic characters in the video game landscape alongside the likes of Pikachu and Mario. While the series has yet to reach the status it used to enjoy back in its heyday, Frontiers has solidified the direction SEGA needs to take in order to bring in more players and elevate Sonic to greater heights.
