Codemasters is one of the biggest companies in the video game industry, particularly when it comes to the racing genre. For over 30 years, the company has been making racing titles, such as the F1 and DiRT franchise, that have been nothing but dominant. Recently, it released F1 2021 in July and is now working on an unannounced AAA racing game that the company says is its “most ambitious and biggest” one in over a decade.
In February 2021, Electronic Arts acquired Codemasters for $1.2 billion and added more racing IPs under its name thanks to it. Now, both the companies seem to be working on a new game and this one seems exceedingly promising. Recently, we came across a few new job listings on the Codemasters website, all of which suggest that the company has an unannounced AAA racing game in the works and it’s quite enthusiastic about it.
One of the spotted job listings is for the Development Manager position at the company’s Cheshire studio in the United Kingdom. The description for the job listing reads, “Codemasters Cheshire are currently looking for a Producer to join the team as they look ahead to their next project having delivered Dirt 5, the racing experience, that welcomed in the next generation of consoles.”
Furthermore, the description also mentions, “Under the guidance of the Development Director and with support from the production team, you will help handle production of the studios’ next key project – which promises to be the most ambitious and biggest game that Codemasters has made in over a decade!” Of course, it’s uncertain which franchise this new game is from. However, it’s clear that it’s going to be a massive one.
Another job listing on the company’s website is for the Senior Manager – Engineering position; the description of which reads, “The team have been hard at work supporting Dirt 5 since its launch with plenty of additional content and as this starts coming to an end, we are already hard at work concepting the next AAA project.”
DIRT 5 was released in November 2020 and has received a lot of additional content to keep players engaged ever since. It seems like that is about to come to an end and Codemasters is moving onto its next big AAA game, which could just be DIRT 6 or a new Need for Speed sequel — perhaps, Electronic Arts is using its newly acquired studio to make something innovative within its pre-existing franchises. Obviously, this isn’t confirmed by Electronic Arts or Codemasters, so do take it with a grain of salt.
With the acquisition of Codemasters in February 2021, Electronic Arts said that the company plans on releasing a new racing game every year, while iterating that Codemasters would help it become the “global leader in racing entertainment.” The company already has GRID Legends scheduled for release sometime in 2022, so we’re anxious to see this even bigger new project.
