Roblox Will Soon Be Available On PlayStation And Meta Quest

The recent Roblox Developers Conference has confirmed that Roblox will head to PlayStation and Meta Quest in October. According to the official announcement, around 65.5 million people access the online platform regularly, and they expect this to grow once it is available on more platforms. In addition, Roblox has announced improved immersion, communication, and monetization moving forward.

With millions of players who average 2.3 hours daily on Roblox, the platform seeks to not only bring the gaming app to more players but also improve it significantly for existing ones. It recently announced what it calls “3D Immersive Communication and Connection.” With this, players can personalize avatars better than ever in a 3D immersive experience.

New mesh and texture APIs will be added to give players the ability to morph the shape and even dimensions or textures without leaving the experience. The announcement illustrated, “This will start with the customization of avatars themselves—adding freckles or changing the shape of the jaw—then expand into in-experience creation of avatar items, clothing, and emotes.”

The avatar creation tool will now support importing OBJ, FBX, and standard gLTF files. A preview function has also been added to show players their avatars with different emotes, expressions, clothing, etc. As for the future, we can expect new ML-powered tools in late 2023. These will allow users to automate the processes of skinning, segmenting, caging, and rigging the model.

As for the “communication” feature, Roblox will add an open-source feature, “Roblox Connect,” that allows players to call each other with their avatars in a shared experience, perhaps similar to the Metaverse, but minus the complexity. This feature will launch later this year and could have some verification process identical to the voice chat feature, ensuring only those above 13 in the U.S. use it.

Roblox Connect will use players’ body language and transport them to an immersive experience shared by both parties. Apparently, you only need your device’s camera to use it, and the company believes that it is “essentially packaging a Hollywood-style motion capture studio into something that runs on a mobile phone or laptop—without the need for equipment or motion-tracking dots.”

Aside from features tailored towards gamers, Roblox will add a suite of tools and services for creators. The company shared that between June 2022 and June 2023, Roblox developers made around $680 million. A generative AI will be added to Roblox, making creation easier on the platform. It will essentially be your assistant and aid you in your work. Creators will find it in Roblox Studio and Creator Hub later this year.

Roblox also aims to bring numerous other opportunities to help creators earn more from their creations. These include subscription models, selling on its online Marketplace, immersive ads, and notable improvements to some of the already-existing earning methods. It will also significantly improve some of the safety aspects on its platform to ensure players, creators and Roblox enjoy a healthy community.
