Story Highlights
- Other documents from the Insomniac Games hack have revealed that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart made $64 million in profit.
- The platform title brought in $145 million in revenue against a $81 million budget and has sold 2.7 million copies as of 2022.
- The previous slide, which revealed that the game lost Insomniac $8 million, was just a projection and is dated a year before the game launched.
New information from the hefty Insomniac leak has revealed that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart did make a profit for Insomniac Games and wasn’t a financial flop. Figured out by a user on the IconEra forum, the platform game actually made $145 million in net revenue against a budget of $81 million as per data in the leak, resulting in an 80% Return on Investment.
In addition, the leak also disclosed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s sell-through and sell-in figures, revealing the title has sold 2.34 million copies while its sell-in numbers were at 2.72 million. All of this misinformation started when one of the slides present in the leaked documents displayed how the Insomniac title made only $73 million and lost Insomniac Games a hefty $8 million.
However, as the IconEra user pointed out, this slide is dated almost a year before the third-person shooter came out. As you can see in the screenshot below, the presentation has a June 22, 2020 date on it while Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart launched on the PlayStation 5 nearly a year later on June 11, 2021. Therefore, the slide was just projections about the game and not actual data regarding sales.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart sold a pretty solid 1.6 million copies in its first month alone, which equates to $112 million in net revenue excluding the digital deluxe upgrade which was $80. In addition, the $145 million revenue figure is only true as of February 2022 and the game has launched on PC since then. Therefore, it is plausible that the platformer has improved on its 2.7 million sales figure and brought in even more money for Insomniac in the last two years.
Going away from the financial side, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was also a major critical success. The platform title got rave reviews from both critics and fans with its visuals, combat, gameplay, and use of PlayStation 5’s power garnering high praise. Moreover, Rift Apart got a strong 88 Metacritic score and was nominated for Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, and Best Action-Adventure Game at the 2021 Game Awards.
In addition, it won four awards from nine nominations (including Game of the Year) at the 2022 D.I.C.E Awards and got a whopping eight selections at the 2022 BAFTA Game Awards, winning for Technical Achievement but losing out to Returnal for Best Game. Therefore, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has always been a critical success and now, it has also proven to be a commercial triumph.
