The Massive Insomniac Games Leak Is A Serious Threat To The Studio

Almost everything appears to have leaked online.

Story Highlights

  • Insomniac Games has come under the threat of a huge hack by a ransomware group, with many details leaking.
  • The attack has resulted in a lot of sensitive info about the devs to come out. Many upcoming titles were also spilled.
  • Both Sony and Insomniac Games have not officially addressed the leak since the initial warning by the bad actors.

As initially reported by CyberDaily, a ransomware group named Rhysida claimed that it had hacked into the depths of Insomniac Games’ confidential files. The group planned to reveal them if their demands were not met. After a week, the bad actors have divulged over a million files that weigh over one terabyte of data in size. The leak contains a bunch of sensitive employee info, a future timeline of games, other secretive details, and more.

What Does It Mean For Insomniac?

The consequence spells a time of doom and gloom for Insomniac Games as everything ranging from footage about the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game to confidential data like the devs’ passport info and much more appears online. The entire plans of the studio for the current decade have been laid out in some of the surfaced slides. In short, it has turned out to be among the biggest gaming leaks in recent years.

The Rhysida group breached the fortress of Insomniac Games so it could extract a payment of 50 bitcoins —amounting to nearly 2.09 million USD. It demanded payment from the auction to sell it to a private party and prevent the data from leaking to the public. Nearly all of the hacked data was leaked after waiting a week because no party wanted to pay the asking price.

Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner,” read the announcement.

So what does the massive hack mean for Insomniac Games and the gaming industry? The aftermath of the attack could be a treacherous path for devs since sensitive info has also leaked online. It is possible that the studio make massive changes to its internal schedule and plans moving forward. Providing additional security measures to the devs would also be on the table.

The studio will likely try to solve the dilemma behind the curtains and prevent the leaks from thriving for long. Both Sony and Insomniac Games have not officially addressed the latest batch of leaks since the initial hack. But we will probably hear more official details about the massive leak dumps that are sprawling around the forums online. We suggest taking the sprouting leaks with a massive grain of salt since things are subject to change.
