Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Remake Rated By The ESRB

In a new listing, the ESRB has rated Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake E for Everyone, hinting that the release isn’t far away. The rating board cited mild fantasy violence and mild suggestive themes as causes for the E classification and confirmed that the remake will launch on Nintendo Switch exclusively.

Furthermore, the rating summary disclosed some details about Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, revealing it’ll follow the titular character trying to rescue Princess Peach from an alien group just like the original. Puzzle-based and turn-based combat against paper creatures will be part of the RPG. In addition, Mario can attack cartoony enemies with a variety of attacks including boot stomps, hammer strikes, and fireballs, making them disappear into stars and coins.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake will also feature some flirtatious dialogue in addition to large chests and exaggerated proportions as per the ESRB rating. If you aren’t aware, the original iteration of the RPG launched almost 20 years ago in 2004 for the GameCube and was the second title in the Paper Mario franchise.

A huge critical hit, the RPG received universal acclaim with a brilliant 87 rating from Metacritic and praise for its story, gameplay, and battle system. Hailed by many as the best title in the series, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door won Role Playing Game of the Year at the 2005 Interactive Achievement Awards (now known as D.I.C.E awards). In addition, as of December 2007, the title has sold 1.91 million units, making it a decent commercial success.

Nintendo announced the remake during the Direct presentation on September 14, 2023, with a new trailer. This trailer showcased the enhanced graphics and animations this reimagining will have in addition to confirming we can control Princess Peach just like the original.

Developed by Intelligent Systems, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has been in demand by the fans for years and now, they are finally getting their request. A 2024 release date is currently set for the RPG with no specific launch window. Hopefully, this rating means we’ll see the remake on our Nintendo Switch handheld sooner rather than later.
